Miyamoto also revealed that he plays each new Mario game developed for at least 30 minutes in order to ensure their "Mario-ness".

Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of a host of Nintendo games including Super Mario Bros., has spoken about the future of the franchise, as well as the upcoming second animated movie – The Super Mario Galaxy Movie. In an interview with Japanese architecture and design magazine Casa Brutus (via VideoGamesChronicle), Miyamoto also spoke about the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, on which he served as producer. While he didn’t reveal too many details about the upcoming sequel, he did note that it was in the final stages of production.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie was possible because so many people took action and worked together,” said Miyamoto. “As a producer, I tried to make sure the team functioned smoothly. Many of the people involved said they’d like to work on the next project as well, so I guess that means we succeeded to some extent?”

“The setting for the next movie is, just as the title says, the galaxy — that’s all I can really say. We’re in the final stages of production now, but I think it’s going to be fun. I usually just say, ‘I’ll keep working on it until it becomes fun,’ so that alone should tell you how confident I am (laughs).”

Further in the interview, Miyamoto also spoke about the 40th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. franchise, and the general future of the series. Among other things, he reminisced about Nintendo having wrapped up development of Super Mario World, and then tackling a brand new frontier with Super Mario 64 and the shift into 3D.

“By the time we finished Super Mario World, I felt we had thoroughly explored what could be done with Mario in two dimensions,” he said. “Then, when we moved into 3D with Super Mario 64, it brought back memories from my childhood.”

In more modern times, Miyamoto said that there are team mates who help maintain the “Mario-ness” of the newer titles of the franchise, which he elaborated as meaning a game to be unique and accessible to any kind of gamer. While he might not be personally involved in making the new Mario games anymore, Miyamoto noted that he still plays each new entry in the franchise for at at least half an hour.

“Nowadays, I have teammates who help maintain the world of Mario, so I entrust much of it to them,” he explained. “Even so, I always personally play through about the first 30 minutes of the game and check the interface thoroughly — to make sure it really feels like Mario.”

Looking to the future, he spoke about how the Mario franchise has expanded into movies, and how just about every Nintendo console so far has had a Mario game made specially for it. While he doesn’t know how the developers will tackle the next game in the series for the Nintendo Switch 2, he did note that he wants to be healthy to enjoy the 50th anniversary of the character.

“With the help of many passionate people outside our company, Mario has expanded into theme parks and movies, and I’m really looking forward to how things will develop from here,” he said. “Up through Super Mario Odyssey, I feel we’ve done just about everything we could on the Switch. In the past, whenever a new console came out, we always released a new Mario game, so I do wonder how the current team will take on that challenge. But maybe I’ll say, ‘I won’t look anymore!’ (laughs) I just hope to stay healthy until Mario’s 50th anniversary!”

In the Nintendo Museum Official Book, Shigeru Miyamoto, Takashi Tezuka and Koji Kondo discussed the legacy of Mario and its future.

The Nintendo Museum Official Book, released in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros., features members of the original team discussing the game, its legacy, and whether the franchise will continue to be popular in 2085 when it will celebrate its 100th anniversary. The interview segment of the book, according to a transcription by VideoGamesChronicle, features Nintendo executive Shigeru Miyamoto, executive officer Takashi Tezuka, and composer Koji Kondo, along with SRD president Toshihiko Nakago.

Tezuka, according to the book, believes that one of the core reasons behind the popularity of the Super Mario Bros. franchise so far has come down to the fact that the games are developed according to the times. This is because the developers never really know how quickly their players might get bored with the game. Because of this, the company always keeps thinking of new ways to make things interesting.

“One might think it would be a miracle if Mario was still here after 100 years, since we make things while not knowing when our players may get bored with them,” said Tezuka. “If it’s not fun to play, you’ll get bored, and I’m always thinking of how to keep it so that something like that doesn’t happen so that people keep playing.”

“Different times bring different kinds of fun. What Mario can do now is completely different from when we started out. I want to continue making things people find fun to play, including the actions you do, by changing things little by little.”

He also noted that the longevity of the franchise has been helped by multiple generations of players coming together to experience the titles. Currently, he notes that three generations of parents and children can play together, but he doesn’t know if the franchise will get to the point of four generations.

“I think it’d make me very happy if we can share that chance to experience Mario together with family and friends,” he said. “We’ll continue to make Mario games for a long time, so please look forward to them.”

Miyamoto similarly echoes the idea of keeping things fresh by building on top of the core of Mario’s gameplay – running and jumping. He also notes that, while Nintendo might also be expanding the franchise into movies, the company wants to hold on to the interactive and digital roots of Mario.

“It’s a given that Super Mario will constantly evolve by incorporating new digital technology,” said Miyamoto. “Now we’re working in visual fields like movies, but I want to make sure we keep it interactive and digital. As long as we don’t forget Mario’s prime point – running and jumping – as we add new things, I think Mario will be with us for a long time to come.”

“Nintendo takes on unique challenges, and if a new technology is interesting, I believe that by incorporating that technology, we can make that fun expand and grow, like rolling up snow for a snowman. So I hope that you will continue to stick with us.”

As for Kondo, he makes it a point to say that, while he doesn’t know what will happen a century from now, he will continue “to create programs that are intuitively conveyed to others.”

Miyamoto had previously spoken about the Nintendo Museum expansion that has opened up at Universal Studios Japan, noting that the museum itself plays a big role in the company’s plans to make sure that its IP is always alive and accessible.

The trilogies considered for inclusion here have a thread running through them, and whilst some can be experienced as a standalone product, they’re really part of an overarching picture portrayed across three entries.

Proof that some of the best things come in threes, these video game trilogies tower precisely because they come in a trio. Their first entries establish a framework, with subsequent entries embellishing mechanics, expanding stories, or introduce new settings or characters before wrapping everything up in a triumphant finale.

To break away from the linear storytelling in prior triumvirate Crash Bandicoot, Naughty Dog developed a new graphics engine capable of rendering seamlessly connected open environments rife for joyful exploration for their Jak and Daxter trilogy. Ostensibly a third-person action platformer, the series also featured excellent combat and movement mechanics underpinned by the Eco system – a substance that can dramatically enhance player abilities; move sets which became increasingly complex and satisfying as the trilogy progressed.

The animated film is the first movie of 2023 to gross $1 billion at the box office. It's also the highest-grossing film of the year.

Less than one month after its release, The Super Mario Bros. Movie has crossed $1 billion at the box office. As reported by Variety, the animated film grossed $490 million in North America and $532 million internationally. It’s also the first movie to hit $1 billion at the box office this year.

With $204.6 million earned domestically in its first five days, The Super Mario Bros. Movie had the biggest opening weekend of 2023. It’s now the highest-grossing domestic and international film of the year and the highest for a video game adaptation to film.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie features Chris Pratt as Mario, Jack Black as Bowser, Anya-Joy Taylor as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong. It sees Mario and Luigi warped into the Mushroom Kingdom and the latter captured by Bowser. With Princess Peach, Mario must train and become a hero (sort of) to save his brother.

It's the biggest video game adaptation in history, surpassing Warcraft and Pokemon: Detective Pikachu in less than two weeks.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Illumination, Nintendo and Universal continues to rack up sales. As Variety reports, it earned $92 million this past weekend, earning $353 million at the domestic box office. Internationally, it earned $102 million for $339 million overall.

Within 13 days, it’s already earned over $700 million worldwide. The feat is especially noteworthy because post-pandemic, only 12 Hollywood films have managed to cross that figure. It’s also the highest-grossing film this year, both domestically and globally, and far surpassed the likes of Warcraft and Pokemon: Detective Pikachu as the biggest video game adaption yet.

It remains to be seen if the film, starring Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach and Jack Black as Bowser, can become the first film this year to cross $1 billion in revenue. Given its success, a sequel could also likely be on the cards. Stay tuned for further updates in the coming months.

The domestic box office brought in a massive $204.6 million in that period, while the internal box office earned another $173 million.

Illumination’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie is off to a strong start at the domestic box office. It earned $146 million in the opening weekend and $204.6 million in the first five days, per Variety. Internationally, it brought in $173 million for $377 million thus far.

Created by Illumination, Nintendo and Universal, the film is an animated adaptation of the popular video game series. It stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong and Jack Black as Bowser. The story sees Mario arriving in the Mushroom Kingdom for the first time and embarking on a quest to save Luigi from Bowser.

Though projected to earn $86 million in its first weekend and $125 million in five days, the numbers were revised as time passed. As Jim Orr, Universal’s president for domestic distribution, said, “The box office just kept growing and growing. This result speaks to the extraordinary love for these Nintendo characters and the storytelling from Illumination.”

The film’s success opens the door for a sequel, though Nintendo is yet to confirm the same. As for the video game series, a new game hasn’t been announced, but creator Shigeru Miyamoto advised fans to stay tuned for future Nintendo Directs.

Mario teams up with Princess Peach and the Mushroom Kingdom's residents to save his brother Luigi from King Bowser and his goons.

Nintendo and Illumination have unleashed the final trailer of The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It showcases more of Luigi, held captive in Bowser’s dungeon with other unhinged prisoners, and Mario’s resolve to rescue him. Check it out below.

Played by Chris Pratt, Mario’s clumsiness from previous trailers gives way to platforming skills here, and we also get to how Donkey Kong looks with a Fire Flower. More high-speed action on Rainbow Road is showcased with Mario and friends battling various Koopa Troopas in high-speed combat. Suffice it to say that it’s less Mario Kart and more Mad Max with the destruction going on.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie premieres on April 5th in theaters worldwide. Along with Pratt as Mario, the movie features Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Jack Black as Bowser and Keegan Michael-Key as Toad. Stay tuned for when it’s finally available.

Releasing worldwide on April 7th, 2023, the movie's second trailer showcases the talents of Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, and others.

Nintendo and Illumination Pictures debuted the second trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie at the latest Nintendo Direct. It features a redesigned Donkey Kong (who looks closer to the original concept art), Mario trying his best and Luigi screaming in terror. Check it out below.

Jack Black continues to kill it as Bowser, but Anya Taylor-Joy and Charlie Day, who voice Princess Peach and Luigi respectively, also get their time to shine. The story sees the Mushroom Kingdom rising to face Bowser’s invasion. However, for Mario, training is required to ensure he’s able to fight back.

Along with the Tanooki Suit and Fire Flower, we also catch a glimpse of Rainbow Road and various Karts as Mario seemingly rallies entire galaxies to their cause. It’s pretty epic and a definite step up from the first trailer. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is out in theaters on April 7th, 2023, worldwide and on April 28th in Japan.

The trailer will debut during a new Nintendo Direct. The film releases on April 7th, 2023, in North America and April 28th in Japan.

A new Nintendo Direct has been announced, but not for any upcoming games. Instead, this broadcast will debut the second trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie. It goes live today at 2 PM PT/5 PM ET. Nintendo has also explicitly clarified that no game information would be revealed.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, with Shigeru Miyamoto serving as producer for Nintendo, it sees Bowser (voiced by Jack Black) searching for the Power Stars, toppling everyone who gets in his way. Meanwhile, Mario (voiced by Chris Pratt) arrives in the Mushroom Kingdom and meets with Toad (Keegan-Michael Key). Presumably, the two will meet and fight, and Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy) could get kidnapped. Time will tell.

Little else is known, save for Donkey Kong (played by Seth Rogen) and Luigi (Charlie Day) making appearances. The Super Mario Bros. Movie launches on April 7th, 2023, in North America and April 28th in Japan. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
