If you wanted to get your hands on The Amazing Spider-Man video games (I don’t know why you would, but if you did), well, you’re running out of options. Apparently, both games have been delisted from the PSN Store, as well as from Nintendo’s eShop. This means you can no longer get the games digitally on PS3, PS4, PS Vita, Nintendo 3DS, or Wii U.

Apparently the second game is still currently available on Xbox digitally, but the first one is nowhere to be found; meanwhile, both games can still be purchased on Steam. As for what the reasons for this purge may be, it probably has to do with Activision no longer having the rights for the Spider-Man property (since apparently Sony has them now), causing them to withdraw the games from distribution.

If for whatever reason you should still want to purchase the games, feel free to hunt down a physical copy- they are rather cheap, though I imagine their price will go up now that they are about to get rarer. If you already bought the games digitally on PlayStation on Nintendo, you will still be able to download them from the stores.

We have this week’s UK charts for you and it’s not surprising that Lego Batman 2 has taken the pole position again, followed by London 2012: The official videogame of the Olympics – which btw is a pretty decent game as you can see from our review over here.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future soldier comes at no. 3, followed by The Amazing Spider-Man, which is the Activision movie tie-in game that has performed decently so far, and you can check out the review for that as well over here.

Here’s the analysis by UKIE:

‘Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes’ (-10%) holds on to No1 for a heroic five weeks in a row, which is more consecutive weeks at the top than any other title so far this year. The Olympics is a week away and in preparation sales of Sega’s official London 2012 game rise by 5%, keeping it ahead of ‘Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier’ (+40%) which jumps 2 places to No3, boosted by a price drop. Activision’s two Top 10 titles ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ (-28%) and ‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3’ (-4%) take the next two slots at No’s 4 and 5 respectively.

In a quiet week, there is only one Top 40 new entry, Square-Enix/Nintendo’s ‘Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance’ new at No6. It’s the second biggest 3DS launch so far in 2012 (behind ‘Resident Evil: Revelations). Perhaps boosted by the cinema release of the new film, ‘Batman: Arkham City’ (+37%) climbs back into the Top 10 at No7 ahead of Sega’s second Olympic hopeful ‘Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games’ (+13%) which jumps 2 places to No8. The Top 10 is rounded off by previous All Formats No1s ‘Max Payne 3’ (+23%) at No9 and ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’ (-15%) at No10.

You can check out the full top 40 list below.

With The Amazing Spider-Man, Activision and developer Beenox have done a solid job of bringing Spidey to the small screen, his latest outing arguably one of his best for many years. Plotwise it picks up immediately after the events of the movie so it’s therefore probably advisable to watch the film first to avoid spoilers!

Right from the start, the action comes thick and fast

You play as Peter Parker’s alter ego Spider-Man and Manhattan is your playground in this open world adventure. Taking place a matter of months after Dr Curt Connors metamorphosed into The Lizard and wreaked havoc, Peter is being shown round the headquarters of Oscorp Industries – the company at the centre of the whole affair. His guide, Gwen Stacy, doubts the intentions of the head honcho Alistaire Smythe with his cross-species experiments, and inevitably all hell soon breaks loose. As the creatures escape, and equally-threatening robots are unleashed on the city’s unsuspecting inhabitants, it’s down to Peter to don his trademark suit and swing into action.

Besides the main storyline, this is a game that will leave comic book fans drooling thanks to the prospect of exploring every inch of New York to uncover alternative costumes and other collectibles including some 700 comic book pages(!). Find them and they combine to form some classic comic books that can be accessed through the Extras menu. You can even scroll through the pages, zoom in and read every word – certainly an incentive to buy a copy of the game if you’re that way inclined.

The animation, movement and appearance of Spidey are top notch

It’s really quite a buzz to fly through the air with the greatest of ease. The controls are instantly accessible with buttons assigned to swinging, firing webs from your wrists, “Web Rush” – which slows time and allows you to pick various places to leap, and “Web Retreat” allowing you to quickly leap away out of danger.

The city offers a vast play space and it’s great fun to swing around. Besides some occasionally low-res buildings, it all looks and feels fantastic. You’ll have to forgive the fact the illusion is shattered a little by your webs seemingly attaching themselves to nothing when outside though. Glide gracefully through an expanse of parkland, for example, with no skyscrapers or buildings about and you can still swing to your heart’s content despite the fact your webs must be attaching themselves only to the skies above. That aside, Beenox has done a great job of replicating the key characteristic of one of our favourite superheroes. It’s not quite as great when you’re roaming around in sewers or in the tightly-confined corridors of Oscorp’s HQ mind you. These segments tend to rely a little too heavily on stealthy movement – scurrying about the walls and ceilings before waiting to pounce on some unsuspecting guard (reminiscent of a certain bat-related game released not too long back!)

Stealth plays a major part in the combat – a lot of which is borrowed from Batman

The presentation overall is top notch; the graphics are clear and crisp and really look the part, although there are some glaring low res textures across the Manhattan skyline, which is a bit of a shame. The pedestrians also feel a little one dimensional and you never truly feel this is a living, breathing city like you did with Grand Theft Auto IV or even Prototype 2. Nonetheless, Spidey’s suit looks top notch, as do his webs and animations. I particularly liked the way his Spidey costume became more shredded the more of a beating he takes. The voice acting is nicely done and helps the story evolve nicely.

Besides the stealth aspects mentioned above, the game borrows a lot of the core combat mechanics from the hugely successful Batman games – with the combos, counters and chain attacks all feeling a little too familiar. Unfortunately, the last two Batman games set the stall quite high and Spidey never quite manages to match them. Towards the latter stages of the game’s 12 main levels, it all gets a little button mashey too – the use of QTE and relentless tapping of buttons starts to grate a bit, particularly during some of the boss battles (which are all too easy and repetitive – and feel like a bit of a missed opportunity).

Even on the toughest settings, it’s all too easy

This game is certainly an enjoyable romp and kept me engrossed until the very end… The problem is the credits started rolling up the screen all too soon. Even on the hardest Super Hero setting I completed the game in a little over six and a half hours, and that included plenty of messing about trying to pick up a few comic book pages and other collectibles. Once the main missions are out of the way, you can always mop up the rest of these hidden items or wander the city a little more to help the infected, save mugging victims, or help the police foil robberies and so on. But it’s really too little to justify the price tag in my mind.

So is The Amazing Spider-Man “amazing”? Not quite – but calling it The Fairly-Decent Spider-Man wouldn’t have had the same ring to it, would it? A great game that’s real fun while it lasts – perhaps given the short play time, however, it’s better suited to a rental unless you’re a real fan of the webslinger.

This may pretty well be the first movie review on GamingBolt, and it’s also a start of something new that we, the staff, have been planning for a long time. Exciting times ahead, so here’s what I thought about it, and whether you should buy the tie-in game from Activision.

Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films produced by Sony Pictures was something of a phenomenon, and who can forget the spunky Tobey MacGuire — the main protagonist of these films. Well, it’s time for a reboot now featuring a new cast and the origin story again — you know, the usual, how Peter Parker transforms into Spider-Man and all those things.

Director Marc Webb has given this film, The Amazing Spider-Man, a completely new look and direction and fans of Raimi’s films will take some getting used to. Sequels are being planned from what I saw after credits of the movie, and it feels like this direction suits it best.

Peter Parker, played by Andrew Garfield; and Emma Stone, who plays his love interest in the game, have pretty good chemistry between them, and that probably has to do with the fact that they’re a couple in real life as well. In the movie, it felt like there was no build up in the romance and these two felt like a couple from the day they met, which is not a bad thing in itself, but makes watching it mundane.

The film’s villain was completely underwhelming, played by Rhys Ilfans, and there was simply no attachment to his character. A complete contrast from Doctor Octopus of Spider-Man 2, which is the bar Webb should have been aiming for, however, the sequel may change things with the Goblin storyline — which is a logical outcome of the origin story.

The pacing of the film is great, with never a dull moment, and one thing that stood out was the basketball scene where Parker schooled his bully and destroyed the hoop in the process. Watching this scene in 3D, the rush was phenomenal.

Considering the film was shot entirely in 3D, the effect was mild and overall pretty disappointing. It felt like they switched off the whole thing, only intensifying it during the action sequences and even then, it’s nothing compared to the Amul Butter advertisement shown before the movie started.

The basic plot, apart from the origin story, was about how Parker stops the Lizard, who aims to make everyone in the city Lizards by using a machine that spews chemicals or whatever in the atmosphere. The scene where the city rallies around Spider-Man was well done, I suppose.

Worth a watch and getting the Blu-Ray release later if you’re a fan of Spidey in general. As for the game, you can read about that over here.

I used to firmly hold the belief that Batman was far and away the worst super hero; a rich bloke who’d watched too many Bond films and vampire novels; a poor-man’s rich-man’s Iron Man. Then along came Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, giving that view a swift roundhouse kick in the face and hilarious sand-paper voice aside, completely changing my perception of Bats who now ranks among my all-time favourites.

The Amazing Spider-Man serves to do exactly the same thing for Spidey, the only hyphenated super hero still around, altering my view of him as a character, but certainly not in a good way. The Amazing Spider-Man, as the name suggests, is an official movie tie-in, the first since Spider-Man 3 and the less said about that the better. According to Beenox, the events which take place in the game are set after those in the film, suggesting fans may be best off watching before playing.

With a chequered history of Mac and Windows ports, The Amazing Spider-Man is Beenox’s third Spider-Man game, a universe in which they appear to have a rather hit-and-miss approach. Shattered Dimensions took an unconventional approach to Spidey and amalgamating four Spider-Men from four different universes, receiving fairly high critical acclaim, a stark contrast to Edge of Time, quite rightly laughed out of the room for being rather terrible. GamingBolt were given the opportunity to get handsy with The Amazing Spider-Man at Activision’s Post E3 showcase.

The Amazing Spider-Man has been rebuilt from the ground up, a fresh new take on Spider-Men past, returning to the endless possibilities of an open world sandbox game, traversing through the indomitable New York skyline with nary a care in the world. Such an environment lends itself to a Spider-Man game, a closed world setting never really made much sense, but on paper you could say the same thing about Arkham Asylum.

Initially web-swinging between buildings is nothing short of exhilarating, that first leap of faith towards the streets below is a real heart-in-the-mouth moment, but the sensation quickly wears thin and within minutes web-slinging becomes almost tedious; a seemingly infinite amount of time between swings and trying to navigate this city is simply dull. Wether this is down to the inadequacies of web rush or the limp, lifelessness of Manhattan remains to be seen. The city simply doesn’t feel alive, its citizens merely inhabiting the streets for Spidey’s benefit.

HUD-less gameplay seems to be on the up in recently months, apparently allowing for greater immersion and a more ‘authentic’ experience, to which I am highly sceptical, and The Amazing Spider-Man is no exception. Beenox even explicitly stated this, but all it serves to do is high-light some of the poorer level design choices in the enclosed segments, frequently I became disorientated simply because there were no reticles, way-points or immediately accessible mini-maps as reference.

One of the more robust elements in Spidey’s repertoire is the combat, delivering a relatively solid experience, if leaving you with an overwhelming sense of deja vu. There’s no two ways about it, the combat mechanics are nigh-on identical to the Arkham games, <del>even down to the warning squiggles above an enemies head when they’re about to strike </del> (I’ve been informed in the comments section by Spider-Man himself that these squiggles first appeared in the comics to indicate his spider-sense) which is by no means a bad thing if delivered to the same standard. It’s solid, yes, but feels very lightweight in comparison and just lacks the fluidity that made Batman feel so very powerful.

I’m doubtful that web-head can even be saved a glossy veneer as Spider-Man aside, bland low-resolution textures are ten-a-penny, New York bereft of a personality and left looking like Coventry, even the cars look decidedly 2007.

The only real positive I can draw from by short time with Peter Parker is that for once in-game collectibles have a real-world significance, comic pages can be collected, scattered around the city like scraps of pornography at a railway siding, but what’s unique here is that each page unlocks a digital version of the original Amazing Spider-Man comics, the entire collection available to view in-game.

The Amazing Spider-Man is nothing short of a disappointment and at its current duration, feels limp and impotent, delivering one of the least satisfying sandbox super hero games to date. Spider-Man is starting to feel less like a formidable crime-fighting super hero and more like a aging Daddy Long Legs, aimlessly bumbling about the room before getting tangled in his own web and killing himself.
