Every path you take in these games is a curated masterclass in fun. Here's our list of best linear games of 2024.

Open-world games were a dime a dozen throughout the 2010s, with studios chasing that Skyrim success with almost reckless abandon. Advances in tech have since streamlined the process of making huge game worlds, giving studios a better reason to invest their efforts in them. While gamers still clamor for a satisfying open world to explore and immerse themselves in, interest has shifted to more focused and curated experiences. Linear games are on an upward trend, with platformers like Astro Bot and action games like Black Myth Wukong winning over gamers’ hearts and wallets this year. Here are the 15 best linear games of 2024.

Arizona Sunshine Remake

The original Arizona Sunshine from 2016 caused a bit of a stir regarding some of its content being locked behind Intel Core i7 CPUs. Now in 2024, you can play all of that content, including two large DLCs and numerous updates with a ground-up remake to match Arizona Sunshine 2’s visuals. You’re mostly shooting zombies with your two VR hands throughout the linear narrated campaign, but there’s also a lot of quirky environmental interactions that make this a classic VR experience; and best of all, it has three-player co-op to triple the shenanigans. If you own a VR set, Arizona Sunshine Remake is a clear no-brainer.

Warhammer 40K Space Marine 2

Space Marine 2’s multiplayer offerings are tremendous fun, but it’s the solo campaign where the core meat and potatoes of the game are found. The story kicks off where Space Marine 1 left off, with Captain Titus returning to command his squad against the Tyranid swarms after a mortal wound. With a runtime around 10 hours long, Space Marine 2’s campaign is a riotous time filled with spectacular vistas and visceral combat. This is a hack and slash in a lot of ways, but Space Marine 2 emphasizes precise countering more than its predecessor, adding a bit of extra skill to the mix. Grabbing a partner to run through the separate co-op missions is a treat as well, but the AI companions aren’t bad either with their consistent healing and tanky defense. Space Marine 2 feels like a blast from the past with its fast-paced campaign density.

Silent Hill 2 Remake

Remaking a horror masterpiece like Silent Hill 2 is no easy feat, yet Bloober somehow pulled it off with great success. A key ingredient in that success is the expanded environments. The atmospheric hallways and foggy outdoor areas greatly encourage exploration, leading the player to a host of new items and collectables that can be viewed from any angle. Helping you navigate the expanded areas is the new over-the-shoulder camera perspective, which gives further context to environments. The original Silent Hill 2 clocked in at around 12 or so hours, but the remake can easily take double that time from all the added exploration. Still, the remake maintains the dense pacing of the original in spite of this, making it one of the more impressive and scary linear games on this list.

Black Myth Wukong

Black Myth Wukong takes a rather unorthodox approach to level design, seesawing back and forth between corridor-like linearity to wide open environments. Most puzzling of all, there’s no map or navigation tools to assist your exploration in the game. Despite this, we couldn’t help but marvel at the variety of biomes and beauty of environments within the Journey To the West-inspired tale. But it isn’t just some of the environments that proceed linearly, your weapons and armor automatically upgrade as you progress too. Black Myth Wukong is a masterclass in focus; it doesn’t meander and bloat the player’s time with frivolous stuff, instead honing in on what makes it great.

Stellar Blade

If you’re familiar with the way Nier Automata handles level design, you’ll feel at home within Stellar Blade. One area that Stellar Blade expands upon its level design is the engaging collectibles scattered across its environments. You have everything from soda cans to posters and boxes of loot to collect, rewarding you with new costumes for Eve and her companions to wear. The wide-linear nature of the environments hits a sweat spot that always manages to make you feel like you’re progressing forward while giving satisfying room for exploration as you do so. Parts of the story have you strictly going from A to B with collectibles nestled within secret routes off the beaten path, while others are open zones meant for questing and exploration. Stellar Blade excels in the way it mixes urgency and exploration with its wide-linear level design.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2

Hellblade 2 takes quite a different approach to linear level design. Due to the zoomed-in focus on very specific locations, Ninja Theory managed to go all-out decorating each hand-crafted environment and presenting it all with an unmatched cinematic flair. It’s no exaggeration to say that Hellblade 2 is among the most graphically impressive games to date. This combination of chiseled graphical fidelity with cinematic flair help cement Hellblade 2’s Norse-inspired locations into the player’s memory. It may be a straightforward game in all aspects of its gameplay, but Hellblade 2’s psychologically rich narrative and impressive visual presentation punctuate its linear design with a bold exclamation point.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership

Despite introducing a sailing ship into the Mario & Luigi series, Brothership still follows a more or less traditional critical path. The brothers’ overarching goal this time around is lighting the four Great Lighthouses throughout Concordia’s oceans. The developers made sure each of the four Great Lighthouse dungeons were top-tier, earning the top spot on my list of Mario RPG dungeons. When they’re not puzzling their way through the Great Lighthouse dungeons, Mario & Luigi are busy linking together the distinctly themed islands with the ship. Brothership threads its themes of connections brilliantly through the narrative and humorous writing, forming a cohesive story that impresses despite its basic appearance.

The Plucky Squire

The Plucky Squire mashes together a bunch of different genres onto the framework of a top-down adventure game. A majority of your time is spent swinging around a sword defeating enemies, but the sheer amount of odd little minigames ranging from Punch-Out sequences, to Duck Hunt shootouts, and even some turn-based RPG fun, is chaotically enduring. And then there’s the puzzles that ask you to rearrange sentences for new props to appear inside the picture book you inhabit. And yes, you even get to pop out of the book and into ‘the real world’ several times. The pop-up book aesthetic puts a bow on the whole package, making The Plucky Squire one of the most enduring linear games of the year.

Neva

Like the studio’s previous game Gris, Neva does more than just offer up a compelling platforming game; it’s an emotional audio/visual art piece. The bond between Alba and her wolf pup Neva grows as the seasons change throughout the adventure, manifested in turn by more advanced platforming challenges. Neva differentiates itself from Gris with its emphasis on combo-based combat and precision platforming sequences, providing a punchy and satisfying linear adventure full of heart.

Akimbot

If you’re looking for an old-school action/adventure game that’s as straightforward as it is fun, look no further than Akimbot. Like its Ratchet and Clank inspiration, you have a range of gun types to unload on enemies with through a linear story. The pacing of the action is non-stop, supplying a constant stream of action-platforming fun. And the best thing is its gameplay doesn’t overstay its welcome thanks to a variety of activities and sequences breaking up the usual run-and-gunning (such as the bullet hell sections). Akimbot is one of the those games that’s effortless to just drop in and play without too much thought or prep-work, and I still often get the urge to start up another playthrough many months after completing it.

Lego Horizon Adventures

Despite its open world source material, the Lego-fied version of Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the most linear and straightforward Lego games to date. You play through the basic storyline of Horizon Zero Dawn through linear mission-based levels, returning to the Mother’s Heart hub area in between your excursions. There’s not a ton of exploration in this game except for some smaller open areas and branching paths in the levels, but the hub does allow for some satisfying customization and personalization. Whether you’re a Horizon fan or a Lego connoisseur, you owe it to yourself to play this unique take on the PlayStation IP solo or with two other friends.

Princess Peach Showtime

If you’re looking for a fun mish-mash of different gameplay ideas and themes presented in true Nintendo fashion, Princess Peach Showtime will satisfy. Each stage has a unique theme that completely alters the gameplay and aesthetics, as well as, of course, Peach’s outfit. From lassoing up bandits on a horse to swordfighting through hack and slash dungeons, the creative levels give you reasons to come back and replay them. Like previous Good Feel games, stages are absolutely filled with collectables and secrets, providing solid replay value.

Astro Bot

Unlike Princess Peach or Akimbot, Astro Bot takes a more open approach to some of its levels, taking a cue from something like Super Mario Galaxy. Still, Astro Bot’s levels comprise mostly linear challenges, and oh how fun they are. 3D platforming never felt better than with Astro Bot’s high tech Dual Sense functionality – it goes beyond a mere gimmick, being a primary function of gameplay. Every action in the game is accompanied by a signature rumble from the controller. Each stage is tailored specifically to the PS5 and its controller, providing a unique kind of console experience. Likewise, stages take full advantage of Astro’s abilities in creative and imaginative ways, proving that linearity can be an enormous strength in platforming games.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak

I know, I know, an ongoing JPRG series with a dozen connected games is a hard sell for most folks. But you owe it to yourself to give Trails Through Daybreak the light of day. For one, it forms the beginning of a new arc with a fresh cast of characters set in a different province from previous games. It’s also just a phenomenal turn-based RPG through and through. If you enjoy dialogue-heavy RPG stories with a linear structure that lets you explore its towns at your own pace, Trails Through Daybreak may be the surprise hit that gets you invested into the wider series.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle

Not only is this the first Indy game in 15 years, it’s also a return for MachineGames after their run of successful Wolfenstein reboot titles. As previews have observed, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle features a lot of stealth. Its core gameplay revolves less around – well, revolvers – than you’d come to expect, supplying an experience more in line with the Thief series. You’re often hiding behind baddies to knock them out before finding that ever elusive key to the locked door down the hallway. What we’ve seen of the trailers has us reassured that MachineGames knows what makes Indiana Jones stories so fun charming. Hopefully, the stealth mechanics and story manage to reach the highs that the IP has been lacking in recent years when Indiana Jones and the Great Circle launches December 9th.

Don't let these games fly under your radar.

The PS5 added a host of unmissable new titles to its growing library over the course of 2024, and though many of these were obviously pretty prominent and major releases that caught the attention of the industry at large, as always, this year also brought with it a number of remarkable games that haven’t got the sort of attention that they deserve. Here, we’re going to list out a few such titles.

ANIMAL WELL

The golden age of Metroidvanias continues to deliver modern classics, and Animal Well has surely joined that list. With no combat whatsoever and a striking pixel art aesthetic, it allows itself to stand out in a crowded genre, while its finely crafted and dense world, which remains a constant joy to explore from start to finish, is also a highlight. For fans of Metroidvanias, this one is unmissable.

2024 was a bumper year for role-playing game fans, with almost no end to the quality releases. Check out some of the best offerings.

Many will likely look back on 2024 and lament its flaws, especially on the live service front. However, if one genre saw the most success, it’s role-playing games. The year saw many compelling new titles and sequels catering to every kind of player. Looters with deep combat and compelling loot to chase, memorable stories with characters that we formed seemingly lifelong bonds with, impactful decisions that rippled throughout our stories, and gorgeous vistas with a near-endless amount of detail – RPG fans were truly eating good this year.

While next year looks even more jam-packed with incredible adventures, what are some of the best role-playing games from 2024 that deserve your attention? Join us as we sift through the dozens of choices and present the 20 best RPGs of the year that must be experienced.

Path of Exile 2

For all the complaints against its rewards, end-game, map layouts, etc., Path of Exile 2 is still an incredible action RPG, even in early access. Each class and their Ascendancies presented multiple new options; the Skills are impressive while combat feels visceral; and the bosses present some of the best encounters in the genre. The fact that such a sizable end-game is available right now, complete with pinnacle bosses, is also incredible. Yes, there are plenty of things to improve, but Path of Exile 2 is proving just as addictive as its predecessor and will receive double the amount of content before early access ends.

Though not as jam-packed as last year, 2024 offered top-notch single-player games across all genres. Check out our top picks.

Say what you will about 2024 and its myriad failures, especially on the live service front. However, as far as single-player experiences go, we’ve been stuffed beyond belief. Almost every genre has several acclaimed titles to dive into and lose hundreds of hours, but which all stand above the rest? Check out our picks for the 20 best single-player games of 2024.

Silent Hill 2 Remake

There’s something about the second entry in Konami’s survival horror series that keeps fans coming back years and years after its launch. Perhaps it’s the Crime and Punishment-styled plot and how complex James Sunderland’s character, ego and all, is portrayed as he roams this nightmare manifest. While concerns arose over Bloober Team adapting the classic (especially given its previous horror titles), it ultimately delivered on its vision of Silent Hill 2.

Changes seemed a given, whether the over-the-shoulder camera, new attacks for enemies, a more extensive range of areas to explore or a new voice cast. However, Silent Hill 2 remake is a masterpiece in dread-inducing terror, whether you’re walking through its fog-covered streets and watching something scurry nearby or locked in a desperate battle with Pyramid Head. Several sections witnessed significant alterations but didn’t hamper the pacing or story-telling, and the presentation, especially composer Akira Yamaoka’s music, is top-notch. The restless dreams of Konami’s classic will likely continue for generations to come, but the remake offers an excellent homecoming for longtime fans.

At over four years old, the PlayStation 5 offers some of the best games. Check out 30 excellent titles you should play today.

The PlayStation 5 has had its moments since launch, delivering several incredible first-party and third-party exclusives. However, with over four years on the market, one has to ask. Which are the best? Which titles continue to dominate the rankings and what are some of the newer challengers for the throne? Join us as we outline the 30 best PS5 titles as of 2024.

Until Dawn Remake

While the state of Ballistic Moon’s Until Dawn Remake baffled many fans of the original at launch, it’s since received numerous bug fixes and improvements. Granted, the altered lighting in some scenes is still odd, but the remake has otherwise done a great job with its overhauled character models, shadow quality, and revamped cinematography.

Minigames are a common trend with this year's longest games.

The medium of interactive entertainment opens up the variety of things one can do when going through a fictional world and story. Games can vary up content to prevent the player from dropping off of a story, unlike the static narratives found in books and movies. It’s no surprise then, that some of the most time-consuming media of all time happen to be video games. With complex, huge open worlds to explore, and tons of characters to talk to, games have gotten more immersive over the years. 2024 is shaping up to be one filled to the brim with lengthy video games, so here’s our list of 10 of the longest games of 2024 so far.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak

If you talk to every NPC and exhaust all the dialogue available, there’s no escaping a 100-hour playthrough in Trails Through Daybreak. In Trails games, NPCs each have an ongoing story of their own that updates as you progress key story milestones. The main narrative of Trails Through Daybreak has tons of text on its own, not even counting the NPCs. Trails Through Daybreak’s English word count is well over 1 million, making it the second-largest script in the series to date. By contrast, the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy contains 455,125 English words while The Bible contains about 1 million. The ‘high speed’ fast forward toggle mitigates the time this can take by a bit, but unless you’re a super speed reader, sifting through the reams of text available here will be time-consuming. Interestingly enough, Trails Through Daybreak doesn’t feature the series-staple fishing minigame, so players can focus more on the intricate storyline and characters.

Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth

The latest entry in the Yakuza series also happens to be the largest. Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth features a turn-based RPG combat system, a distinct shift from Yakuza’s familiar beat-em-up formula. The 100-plus hour playtime is partly due to the turn-based combat, but mostly because Infinite Wealth is so chock-full of minigames. Infinite Wealth features well over a dozen minigames, some of them being full-blown games with progression and a grind all their own. For example, the Dondoko Island minigame has its own control scheme, which is fitting considering what it involves. Within Dondoko Island, you build an island resort destination by scrounging up resources and then placing objects around the archipelago. Other minigames are more basic, though no less intriguing, such as the returning karaoke songs, as well as fun parody games inspired by Pokemon and Crazy Taxi. But Infinite Wealth has much more than just minigames to occupy your time. The main campaign consists of 14 meaty chapters that take anywhere from 50 to 60 hours depending on playstyle, which makes it one of the longest campaigns in the Yakuza franchise to date.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a massive game unto itself despite it covering ‘just’ the middle section of Final Fantasy VII. Rebirth retreads some of the most beloved parts of the original Final Fantasy VII and recontextualizes them: the Gold Saucer, Barret’s Corel story, and Cloud’s famous flashback sequence all take place in this middle chapter, not to mention all the twists and deviations toward the end. Much like the previous game on this list, Rebirth goes all in on minigames. You have Chocobo Racing to enjoy, as well as the array of Gold Saucer attractions. Even without the minigames, Rebirth boasts a seamless open world rivaling the size of Final Fantasy XV’s map. There’s a checklist of stuff to do in the open world, but the Protorelic quest is particularly noteworthy since it features some core story content and culminates with a showdown against a familiar character making Rebirth one of the longest games of 2024.

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes

This turn-based JRPG features a wide number of allies you can recruit. There’s a total of 120 recruitable allies in this game, though less than half of them don’t join you in combat, instead helping you out by giving you intel and whatnot. The process of recruiting these characters can range from merely speaking with them to doing fetch quests, so it’s not quite as time-consuming as it could’ve been. The range of other side activities helps make Hundred Heroes a 100-hour RPG.

Dragon’s Dogma 2

Dragon’s Dogma 2 doesn’t have the longest story campaign on this list, but the open world littered with side quests and activities will take you some time to explore for sure. Some of the side quests are substantial affairs, taking you around the world map and requiring multiple steps to complete. With over 40 side quests, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is not wanting in content. That said, the real heart of Dragon’s Dogma 2 lies in its procedural gameplay. Enemies react and behave in unpredictable ways, further compounded by the interactable environments. This leads to many hours had just messing with different builds and finding different ways to defeat monsters. It’s one of those games where you spend hours just messing around experimenting with stuff.

Granblue Fantasy: Relink

Granblue Fantasy: Relink’s campaign is swift and punchy, with about 24 hours or so of gameplay time. While it’s generally a well-received story with memorable characters, the real substance of this game revolves around its endgame content and co-op component. Think of Monster Hunter and you have the right idea. Raids feature difficult bosses and dungeons that you can tackle solo or with others. Leveling up characters and gear is a fixture of Granblue Fantasy: Relink’s endgame gameplay loop, and can take 100s of hours until you feel a sense of completion. All in all, this is a nice hybrid package that includes your traditional RPG story alongside a grindy endgame raid loop to dig into.

Rise of the Ronin

As an open-world samurai game, Rise of the Ronin features a lot of checklists and content to explore. There’s a total of 750 collectibles with 100 fugitives to save in Rise of the Ronin, some of which are very well hidden. The map in Rise of the Ronin measures 10.4 square miles. By comparison, Ghost of Tsushima’s map rounds up to 11 square miles. Though the main campaign comprises only three chapters, there’s still lots of side quests and stuff to collect in the open environment, making Rise of Ronin one of the longest games of 2024 so far.

World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Classic

In the video game world, you can’t really get any bigger than World of Warcraft. The Cataclysm expansion had the most lengthy story at its time of release, which is saying a lot considering WoW’s legacy. For reference, 25 players are polled on HowLongToBeat stating that Cataclysm takes around 385 hours to complete the main story and additional content. Cataclysm is the latest expansion to receive the Classic treatment, which helps smooth some things over with conveniences, but also adds additional wrinkles into the mix. Some additional features include the ability to use mounts, transmogs, and pets across all accounts, a streamlined auction house, and overhauled difficulty.

Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree

Just about everyone was surprised to hear that Elden Ring’s expansion featured another huge open-world zone separate from Elden Ring’s Lands Between. When we actually booted the game up and played ourselves, that feeling of discovering an ever-expanding map hit us all over again just like the base game. The Shadow Realm is far larger than the game’s director, Hidetaka Miyazaki, said it would be in previews. The new zone is roughly the size of Limgrave, Caelid, and half of Liurnia of the Lakes combined. Add to this the additional verticality of the unpredictable terrain and you have another solid 60 or so hours of content on your hands, even if some of it is just empty space with one of those silly cookbooks waiting at a dead end.

Helldivers 2

As a live service co-op shooter, Helldivers 2 doesn’t have a definitive endpoint due to a lack of a traditional campaign or story. Still, despite having a mission-based structure, players clock in an average of 50 hours in Helldivers 2 according to HowLongToBeat. The mission structure revolves around 40-minute timers with a list of objectives to complete. There’s something to be said about completing stuff in 40-minute chunks. The compact time limit lets players know what they’re getting into while giving a sense of accomplishment, encouraging further commitment to the game’s loop. Getting to max level is one of the clear milestones you can achieve in this game, and that feat is typically accomplished around or just above that 50-hour timeframe.

The long-awaited sequel in Falcom's acclaimed RPG series is finally available worldwide for PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch.

Falcom’s The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak is now available for PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch. As the English version of Kuro no Kiseki, it takes place in the Calvard Republic and focuses on Van Arkride, a Spriggan. Check out the launch trailer below.

Unlike the police and Bracer Guild, Van takes on jobs which can skirt the lines of legality. When Agnès Claudel arrives at his office to look for her great-grandfather’s missing orbment, the duo undertake a journey that could determine the world’s fate. Of course, there’s also the matter of political and criminal elements in the capital city of Edith, like the ruthless Almata.

Featuring new and returning characters, The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak is the first title in the series developed on Falcom’s new engine. It also allows switching between real-time and turn-based combat (except in boss fights). Van can also harness the power of Grendel, a powerful form to unleash combo attacks.

As a new beginning that still connects to the bigger picture, Trails through Daybreak is exactly the refresh the series needs.

Even if you’re a longtime fan of Falcom’s Kiseki or Trails series, there’s much to consolidate with each new entry. You could ignore its roots in Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes from 1989, which had a sequel and an entire trilogy before even embarking on the current timeline of titles set in Zemuria, and still be confused. Don’t even get me started on how The Legend of Nayuta fits into all this. Even for those with a passing interest in the series, the Erebonian saga, Crossbell arc and Trails into Reverie are almost a must.

That’s why The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak arrives at such a pivotal point. It’s not a reset – far from it – and doesn’t shy away from the many, many connections to previous Trails titles. However, it is a clean slate in terms of the setting, characters and conflicts, setting the groundwork for a new story existing within the greater framework of the franchise. There’s also the new engine, finally bringing the series into a more contemporary graphical era (circa 2021), and revamped combat that incorporates real-time action into the usual turn-based commands with some twists and turns.

"Those world-threatening circumstances that the series is known for will emerge, but Daybreak does a great job setting the foundation, making you care about its new characters, and telling its story."

While it’s not going to completely change your mind on everything you like or even dislike about the series, Trails through Daybreak is a new frontier, one more grounded and initially less epic than its predecessors. With a dash of Kamen Rider, ancient mysteries in the hands of teenagers and Cyber Elf-like beings, of course.

The story picks up two years after the Great Twilight and Operation Jormungandr. The Erebonian Empire, Crossbell State and the Calvard Republic are at relative peace with each other, with the latter especially thriving under the newly elected president Roy Gramheart. The underbelly of Edith, Calvard’s capital, is a completely different atmosphere, swelling with illicit deals, mafiosos and murders.

Meanwhile, Aramis High School student Agnes Claudel arrives at Arkride Solutions Office to enlist the help of a Spriggan, Van Arkride, to recover her late great grandfather’s missing orbment. Unlike the Bracer Guild or police, Spriggans often skirt the edge of the law to get things done. Van is especially noteworthy due to his manifold connections (in both the Guild and government, no less) but is otherwise easygoing. Things take a turn, however, when he embodies the powerful form of Grendel, and he chooses to “bear the Nightmare” at the behest of his AI, Mare, who mysteriously comes to life.

I’m glossing over many other plot points to avoid spoilers, but Trails through Daybreak takes a steady approach with the pacing. Edith and its inhabitants, like Van’s landlord and “diva” of the Montmart diner Paulette to CID agent René Kincaid, who shares a history with Van, are introduced and receive enough time to shine without bogging down the lead cast. The general setting and its current events progress evenly, allowing players to learn more about the world without completely overwhelming them.

"There’s an altogether different dynamic between Van and Agnes – part business-minded, part camaraderie, and it certainly feels refreshing compared to what we’ve seen before."

The mood can feel slice-of-life before deftly switching to political intrigue and crime drama. Don’t get me wrong – those world-threatening circumstances that the series is known for will emerge, but Daybreak does a great job setting the foundation, making you care about its new characters, and telling its story. The fact that it’s doing all this while slotting in returning characters and advancing the overall plot of the franchise is especially noteworthy.

Much of this wouldn’t have been possible without strong leads, and Falcom has more or less knocked it out of the park. Van has his past, like Joshua Bright, but lives in the moment and proceeds with a cooler, more tactical approach than, say, Rean Schwarzer (with yes, less motivational speeches). Agnes is similarly compelling, as the in-over-her-head-teenager with a strong will to pursue her great-grandfather’s legacy.

While nowhere near Estelle Bright, her manners (which belies her pushy behavior) and determination ultimately help her stand out. There’s an altogether different dynamic between Van and Agnes – part business-minded, part camaraderie, and it certainly feels refreshing compared to what we’ve seen before. Of course, the strong performances by Damien Haas and Amanda Lee reinforce the characters all the more.

The other party members, from the tenacious Jaeger Feri Al-Fayed to the innocuous but scheming Aaron Wei, also add to the atmosphere. Then you have the likes of various factions, whether it’s Elaine Auclair of the Bracer Guild or Shizuna Rem Misurugi of Ikaruga (perhaps one of the best new characters). Of course, you also have all the returning characters, from the villainous Walter the Direwolf from Ouroboros to Fie, Zin and Rixia Mao. This combination of new and old characters intertwining through the plot makes it all the more compelling, and while there are still moments where characters may repeat details, they’re much fewer than what the worst of Cold Steel has offered.

"While the combat has made significant strides over previous titles, the dungeon design still leaves something to be desired."

The other major aspect of Trails through Daybreak is combat. For the first time in the series, players can attack enemies in real-time, rolling out of the way and perfectly dodging certain moves to retaliate. You can shift to turn-based command battles and back to real-time at any time, providing more impetus to mainline different characters during exploration since certain enemies are vulnerable to specific damage types. It’s not quite as fluid as, say, the contemporary Ys games, but it works well, even if more options would have been great.

It’s worth landing some blows before shifting to a command battle to take advantage of the new Shards. These are passive effects that come into play during the command battles, from a chance to add elemental damage to attacks to cast a barrier to heavily reduce damage from some hits. The effects vary based on the Quartz slotted into the Xipha orbment, which also affects the different Arts you can cast. It’s a unique approach that adds more depth to your overall builds, accentuating the new flow to combat without completely ripping away everything that makes Trails’ battles unique.

There are also mechanics like Boost, in which you can expend points to temporarily strengthen a party member, and party members in proximity can benefit from buffs and follow-up attacks. However, you also want to take your positioning into account.

Will you stick close to any ally for those buffs and potentially risk both characters receiving the brunt of AoE attacks? Or reposition to mitigate the damage? That you can move around in real-time during combat (albeit within a limited radius) is also a game-changer for more dynamic strategies. Then there’s Grendel, who can chain multiple attacks in a sequence for flashy combos, providing an extra destructive layer to the already compelling combat.

While the combat has made significant strides over previous titles, the dungeon design still leaves something to be desired. They’re serviceable overall, but the flow and design don’t feel like a major step up, especially when traversing sewers or underground areas. The field areas are better overall, but I would have appreciated something more complex for the pivotal story-focused levels.

"If you enjoyed the previous titles yet yearned for something fresh but familiar, Daybreak provides this in spades while expanding upon the overarching world and venturing in compelling new directions."

On the bright side, at least the requests and overall decision-making are spruced up thanks to the LGC Alignment system, which allows for teaming up with different allies based on your choices. It doesn’t make any significant difference to the plot but provides some nice variance while fitting all the conflicting factions running around.

Presentation-wise, The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak isn’t going to compete with your Final Fantasy 7 Rebirths – not that it has to anyway, given Falcom’s budget and resources. The new visuals are still noteworthy, especially during the more subtle movements in cutscenes, and the art style feels faithful to the series as a whole while establishing its own identity.

The performance is also solid all around, though there were some odd frame rate drops when exploring underground. I’m a bit mixed on the soundtrack, enjoying the music from wandering around Edith Old Town and combat (especially when Grendel awakens for the first time), while the main theme is excellent. It’s not my favorite Trails soundtrack by a mile, but the overall vibe is still good.

Whether The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak should be on your radar depends on many things, but that’s nothing new for the series. Perhaps the best compliment is that it’s not overwhelming for newcomers, embracing a more personal narrative while not maintaining its connections with past games. However, if you enjoyed the previous titles yet yearned for something fresh but familiar, Daybreak provides this in spades while expanding upon the overarching world and venturing in compelling new directions.

Falcom’s The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak is about a month, but fans can go hands-on early with its demo. It’s currently available for PS4 and PS5, though there’s no native version for the latter. Progress transfers to the game at launch, allowing one to get a head-start.

Set in the Calvard Republic several months after Trails of Cold Steel 4 and Trails into Reverie, Daybreak focuses on Van Arkride, a Spriggan. Part-mercenary, part-detective, he’s intertwined in a case with Agnès Claudel, who seeks to recover her great-grandfather’s Orbment. Of course, other characters get involved, like Feri Al-Fayed, a Jaeger searching for her friend.

The latest trailer also showcases Bergard Zeman, a Kunlun master and Van’s teacher. Along with a Law and Chaos Alignment system affecting party members and events, there are options to switch between real-time and command-based combat in field battles.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak arrives on July 5th for PS4, PS5, PC and Nintendo Switch. Stay tuned for updates till then.
