PlatinumGames has released a new DLC for The Wonderful 101: Remastered as part of one of the stretch goals for the remaster's Kickstarter campaign.

PlatinumGames has released a new DLC for The Wonderful 101: Remastered. Titled The Wonderful One: After School Hero – Part 1, it is the first of a planned 2-parter DLC. Check out the trailer for The Wonderful One: After School Hero – Part 1 below.

The trailer indicates that the DLC will feature the same geenral tone and comic-based sensibilities of The Wonderful 101: Remastered. Gameplay, however, is getting a major change from the base game. Rather than being an action game with an isometric camera angle, The Wonderful One: After School Hero – Part 1 seems to be taking quite a bit of inspiration from Capcom’s Mega Man franchise.

The Wonderful One: After School Hero – Part 1 will be a level-based side-scrolling action platformer, complete with the ability to change characters and use different abilities to take on levels and boss fights. The DLC’s story focuses on the story of Luka’s journey to becoming a hero.

The Wonderful One: After School Hero – Part 1 was developed and released as part of one of the stretch goals for The Wonderful 101: Remastered back when the multiplatform release was just a Kickstarter campaign trying to raise money to port the game out of the Wii U and on to modern platforms.

Get a big taste of the recent remaster.

It was 2013 when PlatinumGames and Nintendo teamed up to release The Wonderful 101 for the Wii U. The game was a unique action game that tried to combine several different elements of the action beat’em genre in a huge package. Unfortunately, it ended up being something of a flop, but got a second chance at life with a remastered version that came to several current consoles via crowdfunding and eventually a traditional retail release. Now, those who haven’t experienced it can try out the frantic action title, along with some guests.

Today Platinum announced that a pretty huge demo was coming for the game, calling it the Wonder-Size Cadet Demo, which is said to have two hours of content, which probably covers a good portion of the game’s first missions. If you already have the game or like the demo enough to buy it, they are also giving you codes for instant access to three hidden character from another Platinum franchise, Bayonetta. You can see codes for Wonder-Bayonetta, Wonder-Rodin, and Wonder-Jeanne below.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered is available now on PlayStation 4, Switch and PC. The Cade Demo is live now across all three platforms.

From middling to downright mortifying, these games failed to meet expectations.

2020 is half-way over and has offered up a litany of disappointments. It’s interesting to consider how many games seemed like surefire things before launch and yet, ended up either underwhelming, disappointing or outright infuriating. Without further ado, let’s look at the 15 most disappointing games of 2020 so far.

Warcraft 3: Reforged

How do you possibly mess up a classic game like Warcraft 3? It’s one thing to have multitudes of bugs, horrible multiplayer, an underwhelming UI, and an uneven graphics update. It’s quite another to claim ownership over all custom games with players not even getting credit. Or outright lying about remastered cutscenes and presentation. Or making it so that owners of the original had to update to Reforged, thus ruining their nostalgia as well. Or a dozen other things that make you wonder how Blizzard got to this point.

PlatinumGames’ The Wonderful 101: Remastered is now available for PS4, PC and Nintendo Switch digitally with the physical version out on June 30th. It arrives for North America first with Europe getting it on May 22nd. Check out the super-powered launch trailer below which runs down the key heroes.

The Wonderful 101 launched first for the Nintendo Wii U in 2013 but saw limited success. It was resurrected when PlatinumGames launched a Kickstarter back in February with the intent to self-publish the game on various platforms. For a better idea of how the Wii U version compares to the remaster, head here.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered is only the first of several titles under the Platinum 4 initiative that began several months ago. It announced Project GG, which focuses on an Ultraman-esque giant hero fighting monsters, and also a new engine for its in-house projects. We’re still waiting on the so-called fifth announcement, so stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

The Wonderful 101 originally released in 2013 for the Wii U and let’s just say the response was pretty…muted. It was published by Nintendo and become one of their worst selling titles, and one they largely ignored going forward. Fast forward 7 years and developer PlatinumGames revived the game with a massively successful crowdfunding campaign for The Wonderful 101: Remastered, and it’s now among us. How does it compare to the original release?

The folks at GameXplain decided to take a comparison look between the remastered version on the Switch side-by-side with the original Wii U release. The results are mostly good with performance on the Switch evening out some of the framerate issues that first go around had. As far as visuals, while there’s an obvious resolution bump and some anti-aliasing, there isn’t a big jump there. Check it out for yourself below.

The game is also available for PlayStation 4 and PC, but no direct comparison footage is here. The game is available digitally for all three platforms now, with the physical release for both backers and retail being pushed back into next month.

Heroes, it seems that diplomacy has failed. Well, okay, not really, but it does seem like the upcoming The Wonderful 101: Remastered has hit an unfortunate snag. The game was a rousing crowdfunding success, but it looks like the current COVID-19 has had an impact on the game’s physical release.

Via the official Kickstarter, PlatinumGame confirmed that the game’s physical release has been pushed back to next month. And yes, this does include backer copies as well. However, it seems the digital copy of the game will continue on schedule, and backers who are seeing their physical copy delayed will get a free digital code for Steam. They also do say that it’s possible that backer physical copies could see even longer delays depending on what the distribution model is like in their area.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered‘s physical release is now slated for June 30th in US and July 3rd in Europe. Digital codes will start going out to backers starting on the 7th, and the general digital launch still seems to be slated for May 19th.

PlatinumGames’ beloved yet commercially unsuccessful The Wonderful 101 may not have seen the success on the Wii U back in the day that many feel it deserved, but the game will soon get a second wind, with a remaster – which will be PlatinumGames’ first ever self-published release, thanks to an extremely successful Kickstarter campaign – due out next month. Ahead of that release, we have some new info on the game.

More specifically, we know how large its file size will be on the Switch. Thanks to its Japanese Switch eShop listing (via Japanese Nintendo), we know that the game will come in at 7.6 GB, which is pretty much what you’d expect from your typical Switch release. There’s no telling how close (or not) the game’s file size will be on other systems, given that file sizes are usually smaller on the Switch.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered is out for the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC on May 19 in North America, May 22 in Europe, and June 11 in Japan- just don’t go expecting an Xbox One version anytime soon. In the meantime, check out roughly fifteen minutes of the remastered release’s gameplay through here.

Despite some delays, May is looking pretty good in terms of game releases.

May was originally meant to be a much bigger month in terms of releases. Even with all the delays, however, there are still some incredible games to look forward to, from long-awaited remasters by beloved studios to some rather unorthodox titles. Looter shooters, tactical turn-based titles, a major expansion and even the end of a spectacular journey – there’s something for almost everyone in May. Here are 10 games that you should to keep an eye on next month.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered

When PlatinumGames launched the Kickstarter for The Wonderful 101: Remastered, it probably didn’t anticipate over $2.25 million being raised. Releasing on May 19th for PC, PS4 and Nintendo Switch, the remaster of the Wii U classic features improved graphics, running at 1080p resolution and 60 FPS on PS4 and Nintendo Switch’s docked mode. PC users will have the benefit of ultrawide support and new gameplay features include a Time Attack mode. Whether it translates over to the current generation or not remains to be seen but the porting process has already been an unforgettable journey.

Maneater

What happens when you pit a human against a shark? Probably the same thing that happens when you pit several hundred humans against a shark. This self-proclaimed SharkPG comes from Tripwire Interactive and Blindside Interactive, and sees a baby bull shark growing up to take revenge on a shark hunter. In the process, it’ll nosh on sea-life, venture to shores and yachts to devour humans, and unlock new abilities (like electromagnetic spikes because of course that’s what sharks are known for). You’ll be doing sick flips, hopping onto beaches and just being a general terror en route to evolving into a powerful megalodon. It’s as ridiculous as it is egregious and we can’t wait. Maneater is out on May 22nd for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Saints Row: The Third Remastered

While Saints Row IV: Re-Elected was an underwhelming port, Saints Row: The Third Remastered is actually putting in some effort. Releasing on May 22nd for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, the remaster sports 4000 updated assets, re-textured environments, a new lighting engine and other improvements. It also collects all of the DLC on top of the base game, providing dozens of hours of gameplay into one package. Saints Row: The Third is when the series fully committed to jumping the shark again and again and again. If you’ve never experienced it, the remaster might be worth checking out.

Minecraft Dungeons

After a slight delay, Mojang’s Minecraft Dungeons will be releasing on May 26th for Xbox One, PC, Nintendo Switch and PC. A dungeon crawler, action RPG set in the Minecraft universe, the focus is on exploring randomly generated dungeons and slaying enemies in the search for epic loot as opposed to crafting. Don’t worry though – you won’t face any restrictions with regards to what kind of armor or weapons you can used. Want to rock a bow while running around with an enchanted hammer that chains lighting and creating fire trails? Go for it. In terms of feeding the power fantasy, Minecraft Dungeons should be a nice change of pace for action RPG looter fans.

Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition

Monolith Soft’s classic RPG finally makes the jump from the Wii to the Nintendo Switch in Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition. The sprawling open world and epic story, focused on the war between the descendants of Bionis and Mechonis, have been remade from the ground-up, providing some genuinely great-looking visuals. But even more has been promised, from improved controls to an epilogue called “Future Connected” that takes place one year later. You can even jump straight into the epilogue if you so desire. Though it lacks the extra features of the New Nintendo 3DS version, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition shouldn’t be missed. It releases on May 29th for the Switch.

Someday You’ll Return

A psychological horror game that takes inspiration from the likes of Resident Evil 7, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter and Silent Hill, Someday You’ll Return aims to provide its own twist on the formula. Following Daniel as he pursues his daughter Stela into a foreboding forest setting, one that he swore he’d never return to, the title features crafting, stealth, tracking and even herbalism. There’s even a karma system with your actions influencing the ending. Someday You’ll Return releases on May 5th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.

Borderlands Legendary Collection (Switch)

The critically and commercially successful looter shooter series finally comes to Nintendo Switch on May 29th. The Borderlands Legendary Collection includes Borderlands 1 and 2 along with The Pre-Sequel, with each offering tons of story content to blow through. Not only that but you get all of the post-release updates and DLC, though the recent Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary DLC for Borderlands 2 is sadly not included. Still, there’s more than enough side-quests, guns, loot, humor and violence to grind through, especially on the go. And then you can do it all over again as a different Vault Hunter!

XCOM 2 Collection (Switch)

Let’s be real – are you going to benefit from all the crazy mods and enhancements made by fans to XCOM 2 over the years? No but the XCOM 2 Collection on Switch, which also releases on May 29th, offers what’s still one of the best turn-based tactical strategy titles to sink your teeth into. Along with the awesome base game and DLC packs which introduce alien hunters and robot units, you get War of the Chosen which adds new hero classes, new mechanics, levels and even more challenges. Want to see what happens when a Chosen warps in to ruin your day? This is the game for you. Besides, it’s never too late to jump into the franchise, especially if XCOM: Chimera Squad eventually gets ported over to the Switch.

Terraria: Journey’s End

Terraria is receiving its final update – the real final update, we’re sure – on May 16th for PC with Journey’s End. It revisits all elements of the base game but also includes 1000 new items, a bunch of new weapons, new furniture sets, new consumables, new vanity sets, new pets and much, much more. You can even expect some new town NPCs, new wind mechanics, mini-Biomes and some new visuals, including new backgrounds, for the experience. There’s a whole lot of new content coming, basically, making for one hell of a send-off to the action-adventure sandbox title. Even if you’ve passed on Terraria after a few hours of play, it’s worth coming back with Journey’s End and experiencing everything that’s changed. Plus, it’s free, which is always a bonus.

The Elder Scrolls Online: Greymoor (PC)

The Elder Scrolls Online aka Bethesda’s other online title that’s actually good is getting a major new expansion next month on PC. Releasing on May 18th, Greymoor takes players to Western Skyrim with its snow-covered mountains to battle a Vampire Lord. The latest chapter in The Dark Heart of Skyrim adventure, Greymoor will see players also battling Werewolves and Witches while earning new armor sets and items, and completing new World Events. There’s also a new 12 player Trial, Kyne’s Aegis, which features three new bosses and hordes of raiders. Even if you’re still getting your kicks by endlessly modding The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, it might be worth checking out Greymoor and The Elder Scrolls Online in general.

The world can be a strange and unexpected place. For instance, The Wonderful 101 went from being one of Nintendo’s most infamous and biggest flops to having a very successful crowdfunding run that managed to raise over $2 million in just a month’s time. The remastered version will come out later in the year, and today we got a short video to refresh fans as well as introduce new players to the various heroes.

The trailer is a short affair, but introduces all of the main heroes including the leader of the Wonderful 100, Wonder Red. Each character has their own weapon and specialty that you utilize in combat. Fans of director Hideki Kamiya will also notice some of them are clear throwbacks to his other works, such as Wonder Blue being similar to Dante from Devil May Cry, or Wonder Pink mimicking Bayonetta. Check it out below.

The Wonderful 101: Remastered will come to PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on May 19th. If you aren’t familiar with the title, you can see 15 minutes of uninterrupted gameplay through here.

Apparently, the ongoing Kickstarter for The Wonderful 101: Remastered was less about funding the remaster of the action game and more about gauging interest. Well, I think it’s fair to say it showed a lot of interest. On an original goal of just $50,000, it has now zoomed passed $2 million, which includes more side content.

The $2 million oal was Luka’s Second Mission (the Kickstarter passed enough for the first installment a while back). This will be, as the ame suggests, a second DLC mission of what promises to be an all new 2D side-scrolling adventure game. That should be fun to see when we do get details.

The Kickstarter is now entering its final stages, having just 30 hours to go as of writing this. There are two more stretch goals left, one at $2.25 million for fully orchestral recordings of two themes, and then $2.5 million will see new language additions. It most likely won’t hit either at this rate, but considering the success of the Kickstarter so far, maybe we shouldn’t count them out just yet.
