Owlcat Games outlines its process of deciding which enemies to include in the upcoming CRPG based on the story, mechanics and cool factor.

Owlcat Games has released a new developer diary for Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, its upcoming CRPG based on the Warhammer 40K universe. It showcases the process of creating enemies and confirms the Helbrute, a Chaos Space Marine gone mad due to spending thousands of years trapped in its Dreadnought with the warp affecting its sanity. Check it out below.

The Helbrute is one of the most famous Warhammer 40K miniatures, present from the starting drafts of Rogue Trader. However, the development team goes through a process when deciding which enemies to implement. Do they fit the story and mechanics? Are they distinctive, especially since the team wants enemies of different sizes and abilities? Are they cool?

From there, it works closely with Games Workshop to stick close to the canon, adding shading, textures, animations, VFX, and sound to bring them to life. The Helbrute is only one such terror players encounter – many more unique threats await.

Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader is coming to PC and consoles. An alpha went live last month for those who pre-ordered the Developer’s Digital Pack or Collector’s Edition.

A member of the Emperor's Inquisition, van Calox is a powerful Pskyer that watches over the Rogue Trader and may cull them if necessary.

Of all the Warhammer games released thus far, Owlcat Games’ Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader is unique in that it’s the first CRPG. As a Rogue Trader, you venture to the Koronus Expanse to discover treasure, rule over worlds, and much more. Of course, even with the near-infinite powers bestowed by the Emperor, there are checks and balances.

In a new post, the developer revealed a power that stands above the Rogue Traders – the Holy Orders of the Emperor’s Inquisition. Though their purpose is to destroy threats to the Emperium, they’re not too fond of the Rogue Traders since their “overconfidence and lack of restraint could lead to damnation and, consequently, to unimaginable ruin.”

As a result, a member of the Inquisition is placed on the Rogue Trader’s voidship “to watch and to assess to either respectfully usher the lost ship back into the fold or mercilessly cull the heretic if they are deemed hopeless.”

So, who’s the bundle of sunshine that will accompany you? Interrogator Heinrix van Calox, a Psyker and “living weapon of the Inquisition, an example of the vile power of the warp, bound and controlled by the vigorous training and unbending will of the man himself.”

While previously on a mission at the behest of a “high-standing and powerful” mentor, Heinrix eventually meets the Rogue Trader. While he’s furthering the Inquisition’s goals, he also has to deal with heretics, Xenos and other company that one may keep. “Still, there is something important about this particular Rogue Trader, something that urges the Inquisition to stay the hand of judgement and forces van Calox to endure more than his fair share of questionable decisions from the Lord Captain.”

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is in development for PC and consoles. A release date hasn’t been announced, but Founder’s Packs provide access to the upcoming PC beta. There’s also a physical Collector’s Edition available for pre-order at $299 – head here for more details.

Deal with Xenos and heretics, rule over worlds, find treasures, and use your voidship to settle thousands of colonists into new settlements.

While the first developer diary for Owlcat Games’ Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader was focused on the setting, allies, and choices, the latest is all about the profession itself. What does it mean to be a Rogue Trader? Find out below.

Set in the Koronus Expanse, a long way from the Imperium’s armies and fleets, the region is largely unexplored. It’s still perilous, though, with heretics, Xenos and monsters. Exploration falls on the Rogue Traders, who have been granted “all but unlimited rights and privileges.” Establishing colonies and rediscovering long-lost civilizations is one thing but the player character has the added advantage of deciding their path.

As you journey forth, there are mysteries to solve, treasures to find and even worlds to rule over (both for your benefit and the Emperor’s). You’re also granted a voidship with military forces and thousands of individuals who will establish future settlements. It’s risky though, given the planets teeming with radiation, wandering pirates and even Warp travel.

These are only a few things that players will experience as a Rogue Trader, with more to be revealed later. Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader is in development for consoles and PC. A release window hasn’t been announced, but those who pre-order the Founder’s Pack on PC can access the beta.

Owlcat Games has revealed that one of the factions in upcoming CRPG Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader will be the Word Bearers.

Developer Owlcat Games, through YouTube channel Mortismal Gaming, has revealed that the Word Bearers will be one of the factions in upcoming RPG Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. The reveal also shows off some concept art for the faction.

The Word Bearers, in the Warhammer 40,000 setting, have been around for quite a while. Before the Emperor of Mankind was permanently stuck to his throne for complicated reasons, the Word Bearers acted as the heralds for the Emperor. What set them apart from other similar factions is that the Word Bearers worshipped the Emperor of Mankind as a God, which was something the Emperor didn’t allow.

Needless to say, this caused conflict when the Word Bearers were publically chastised by the Emperor. This culminates in the Word Bearers chosing to worship the forces of Chaos.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader was originally announced back in June. Developed by the studio behind the Pathfinder games, the game is set to be a CRPG, in the vein of the recent Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader doesn’t yet have a release date, but it will be coming to PC and consoles.

Owlcat Games has released the first Dev Diary for Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. The studio shows off environments, the 40k setting, and more.

Owlcat Games has released its first Dev Diary for the upcoming RPG Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. Check out the 3-minute video, where the developers talk about making the game in great detail, below.

In Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader‘s first Dev Diary, we get to see some of the game’s gorgeous locations. To kick things off, lead narrative designer Olga Kellner talks about bringing life to the epic grim darkness of the 41st millennium.

Rogue Trader will feature turn-based combat, as well as adventures featuring space exploration, void ship battles, intrigues, warp phenomenon, and other things that make the Warhammer 40,000 setting so unique.

Players take on the role of Rogue Trader, living their life full of adventure at the edges of the Imperium of Mankind. Decisions made by Rogue Traders end up having far-reaching consequences for entire star systems.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader will offer players a fair bit of freedom. Players can sing praises of the God-Emperor of Mankind, or team up with the enemies of mankind, incurring the wrath of the feared inquisitors.

The Dev Diary also reveals that Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader will feature a party of characters, rather than a singular Rogue Trader. Allies in the game potentially include dangerous psykers, zealous battle sisters, an Eldar ranger, or even a Space Marine from the Space Wolves chapter.

Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader was announced back in June. While it doesn’t yet have a release date, it is currently available for pre-order on PC. Pre-ordering the game grants access to a beta.

Play as Rogue Trader and expand your merchant empire. An early version of the CRPG is available for those who pre-order a Founder's Pack.

After teasing a new adventure, Owlcat Games of Pathfinder fame has announced Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. It’s coming to consoles and PC, though a release window wasn’t confirmed. Founder’s Packs are currently available to pre-order on PC which provides access to a beta.

As a Rogue Trader, the CRPG sees the player exploring the Imperial space with the Warrant of Trade providing numerous benefits. Starting in the Koronus Expanse, they’ll eventually explore the Agri-Worlds and Forge Worlds for the sake of claiming them for the merchant empire. You’ll meet Imperium foes, Xenos and Chaos cults along with potential allies from an armored Space Marine to a Sister of Battle and Aeldari Ranger.

Combat is turn-based and various decisions can impact the “lives of entire worlds.” Studio head Oleg Shpilchevsky said in a press release, “We’re really excited to open a new chapter in Owlcat Games history. Working on such a remarkable universe as Warhammer 40,000 is a great honor but also a responsibility and challenge for us as a team.

“The grim darkness of the 41st millennium is a harsh place of unbound evil, untold sacrifices and large-scale threats and challenges that perfectly transitions into an exciting role-playing narrative that allows an exceptional freedom of in-game choice for the player. We endeavor to bring to the game everything that fans of the CRPG genre love and expect: fateful decisions, non-linear stories, strong and diverse companion cast together with addictive and complex gaming systems to master.”
