Assassin's Creed Shadows has beaten out other 2025 releases like Monster Hunter Wilds and Mario Kart World in European sales.

While 2025 has been a great year for video games thanks to numerous releases and even a new console so far, it looks like Assassin’s Creed Shadows is leading the charts in Europe when it comes to sales for games released this year. According to a report by The Game Business, Ubisoft’s open-world title has beaten out games like Split Fiction, Monster Hunter Wilds, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, and Mario Kart World to lead the charts for 2025 releases.

According to the report, there have been a total of 71 million games sold in 2025 across PC and consoles in Europe, which marks a 6 percent drop over the same period from 2024. This data accounts for sales having taken place up to July 28. Of the 71 million game sales, 52 million were digital copies, while 19.7 million were physical copies. These are 3 percent and 9 percent reductions over the previous year, and around 74 percent of games sold this year in Europe have been digital, which, when it comes to percentages, is a 2 percent rise from 2024.

The best-selling game in Europe in 2025 has been EA Sports FC 25. The title was released back in 2024, and taking it into account, Assassin’s Creed Shadows currently sits in the number 2 spot for game sales overall in Europe across PC and consoles. The top 20 sales chart, which you can check out below, also include other games released this year, including The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, Elden Ring: Nightreign, and Nintendo Switch 2 launch title Mario Kart World. It is worth noting that digital sales data for Nintendo games hasn’t been revealed.

The data, coming from official European charts company GSD, also interestingly omits Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. It was noted as being missing because publisher Kepler Interactive hasn’t shared sales data for the game with GSD. An analyst from GSD, Sam Naji, also revealed some details about how game spending has changed for PC and consoles over the year.

In his analysis, Naji said that the first 19 weeks of 2025 saw spending drop by 2 percent compared to 2024, down to €1.33 billion, while the number of copies sold dropped by 9 percent. He attributed this to the average price of games having gone up by around 8 percent, with gamers spending an average of €29 per game, when compared to 2024’s average of €27 per game. He also noted that digital spending had gone up by 8 percent compared to a 6 percent drop in number of units sold, attributing it to a 15 percent rise in average price for digital games – €22 to €25 per game.

CD Projekt RED's co-CEOs spoke about how Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2's system-based approach can be a path forward for RPGs.

CD Projekt RED co-CEO Adam Badowski has revealed details about how the studio looks at other RPGs in the market, and how a different approach to the genre, like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, still helps CD Projekt RED learn things. In an interview with PCGamer, Badowski also spoke about how BioWare, as well as the gaming industry around the studio, has changed over the years. He also went into how CD Projekt RED is looking at its past games for things that it can evolve.

“BioWare has changed for sure, but the industry has changed too,” said Badowski. “We have a different strategy for our company. We definitely would like to continue keeping and truly understanding our core rules, how we develop our games, and of course, on top of that, we need to find new things, especially in gameplay, because there’s not such a great progress when it comes to good stories.”

“So here we feel very strongly at the same time, so many great things happened in gameplay [since The Witcher 3]. What are players’ expectations here? And there are great games, great mechanics and plus UI [improvements]. So this is the idea for our development, and we are focusing on that, but at the same time we strongly believe in the core of what we are doing here.”

When it comes to a more systems-heavy RPG like Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, which pairs compelling stories and characters with more emergent moments that can happen while players are just out in the world, Badowski believes that it might be the next step for not only the genre, but for CD Projekt itself.

“The Kingdom Come kind of simulation, it’s great,” he said. “There’s so many options, you can change the world, it’s super great. And we would like to keep that, we’d like to follow this trend as well. So these are our next steps for sure, and it’s kind of a similar challenge to what we have in The Witcher 3 because of the open world and storytelling here, freedom of choices. But at the same time, we would like to build very fleshy, very well-motivated characters. So it’s kind of in contradiction from time-to-time. That’s a great design challenge.”

Badowski and fellow co-CEO Michał Nowakowski both also spoke about how Larian’s attempts at the genre with massive hits like Baldur’s Gate 3 also help move RPGs forward. However, Badowski also noted that there are major differences between how a turn-based role-playing game handles things like combat and character interaction, versus how an open-world real-time action game does so.

“In Larian’s case it’s turn-based so it’s a different kind of game, and the way you interact with characters is totally different,” said Badowski. “We like to fully build the characters, understand the past and the future of the character motivation. That’s why it takes so much time. [In BG3] there are great characters as well but sometimes your choices, because there’s freedom of choices in Larian’s work, it pushes you to use different tricks than ours. But I think we observe each other, and there are not that many games like that, so that’s natural, yeah, and we see how players react, how fans react to those tactics.”

Nowakowski believes that it might be good for both Larian and CD Projekt RED to stay in their proverbial lanes with it comes to their different approaches to RPGs. Rather, he spoke about how different developers can look at games from the past and build on top of the strong foundations that had already been laid.

“I think we’re still more in the, you know, we’re a big open world,” said Nowakowski. “But a lot of what Baldur’s Gate 3 showed was an inspiration, and to be honest there’s no shame in that. I think everybody who launches games nowadays is looking back on what was done before, and is looking at what worked and what was great and how and if they can fit it into whatever they are doing.”

“So for sure there was a lot of inspiration and what BG3 did, but I think we’re still more sticking to what was The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk, even if we don’t want to just make another game like that, just with better graphics. We do want to innovate in terms of what’s available in terms of gameplay and so on. I hope when the time comes, that’s going to become clear for the fans as well.”

Nowakowski also went on to reaffirm that CD Projekt RED isn’t planning on making games in the style of Larian’s RPGs. However, the studio still feels quite impressed and inspired when it looks at a game like Baldur’s Gate 3.

CD Projekt RED is currently working on The Witcher 4. The game doesn’t yet have a release date.

In contrast to other open world RPGs like Skyrim.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance launched in a blaze of very public controversy, but its core premise managed to get it to do remarkably well nonetheless, with the game selling over a million copies, and hitting a peak of 96,000 concurrent players on Steam (still the highest for any 2018 release on the platform).

Open world RPGs usually manage to retain their playerbase well over time, especially ones with strong modding scenes (which Kingdom Come also has)- sadly, it seems like that is not the case with Deliverance. Unlike The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the game has lost 95% of its total playerbase since launch, currently hovering at 2,000-4,000 active players at any given time. While Deliverance is also available on other platforms, including consoles and GoG, that is also true of something like The Witcher 3, and for the PC versions, at least, the Steam version is likely to be the most popular one nonetheless.

Hopefully, there is some quality new content announced or released for the game that makes its players look into it again. Otherwise, much like so many other games, its time in the spotlight may be at an end already.

"We want Kingdom Come: Deliverance to be visually attractive no matter the platform you use to play."

Warhorse Studios’ Kingdome Come Deliverance is an upcoming and ambitious role playing game for the PS4, Xbox One and PC. Given the massive scale and scope of the game, there is some concern among the gaming community that the game’s ambitious visuals might be held back on the PlayStation 4 and PC since the game is also being developed on the Xbox One.

“Not at all,” Warhorse Studios’ Jiří Rýdl said to GamingBolt. “We are always targeting the most advanced graphical enhancements in CryEngine, we want Kingdom Come: Deliverance to be visually attractive no matter the platform you use to play. Of course there are differences between consoles and PCs from the point o view of graphical features and computing power.”

Jiří also revealed that the Xbox One version in fact looks similar to the PC version. “On the other hand when we were testing the Xbox [One] version on the same monitor as a PC version, no one was able to say, what version we are just looking at :-]”

Recently we had reported that the title is already up and running on the Xbox One version at 17 frames per second in just three weeks of porting so hopefully the Xbox One port will be as good as the PlayStation 4 one. Kingdom Come Deliverance currently does not have a release date, however it may release next year on the PC with PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions possibly following up later.

Stay tuned for our full interview with Warhorse Studios in the coming days.

With great power come great responsibilities.

Warhorse’s upcoming medieval RPG, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, looks absolutely amazing. It’s been a while, though, since we last heard about it, so today’s newest update comes as a bit of a surprise. Warhorse updates us on the state of the game, while also discussing the issues with game development that crop up when a small, indie game developer rapidly expands.

“Warhorse has doubled in size in the last two months from less than 30 people to 60 of us. The new recruits came not only from our own little country, but also from the US (even from Bethesda), Poland and Sweden. So theoretically we can now do twice as much work. The problem, though, is that work on a game is based on the design document. Naturally, our original plan was to write the design as we went along. According to the design, the core features were supposed to be designed first and as the designs gradually expanded we would take on more people as needed,” they said on their website.

“The new people have to be trained, we all have to get on the same page, write the design in the same way, set up a system of work and define patterns of how we will write so that other people apart from us will be able to find their way in it, and all of that is demanding. Especially when, like me, you have to roll in front of you a massive boulder of backlog stuff.

“Don’t get me wrong. Our design runs to several hundred pages – we don’t pull the game out of thin air. Most of the features are described down to the minutest detail. Only then a situation come along where you are desperately trying to write the last few missing, but quite important features for the programmers, the designers meanwhile are working on lacking craft mechanisms and in the middle of it all ten new graphic and concept designers are asking for assignments. But to assign work to the graphic guys, you first have to read and comment the crafting design from the designers, which after two weeks of work by six people “surprisingly” runs to a hundred pages, and that you cannot read in five minutes.”

In spite of all of this, we are assured that the development of the game is coming along just fine. Hopefully, we get to see more of the title in the coming week, presumably at E3.
