CD Projekt RED believes that The Witcher 4 is going to end up being “something special”. Celebrating the release of the tech demo video for the game during the recent Unreal Engine showcase, CD Projekt RED’s global community director Marcin Momot took to social media to share the video and write a few words about the collaboration between Epic Games and CD Projekt RED to create the tech demo.

“Here’s the very first look at the tech powering The Witcher 4, developed by our team in collaboration with Epic, in buttery smooth 4K/60fps,” wrote Momot on social media platform X. “This game is shaping up to be something special and we can’t wait to show you more when the time is right!”

Head of communication Fabian Mario Döhla also shared their thoughts on the tech demo, and spoke about how CD Projekt RED has some of the “best” and “genuinely nicest” developers in the gaming industry. Döhla also mentioned playing the tech demo’s parts on a base PS5 while still getting high resolutions and good frame rates.

“Some of the best – and genuinely nicest – developers in the industry have poured their heart and soul into this,” wrote Döhla. “I hope you had fun with the tech demo – I’ve played (on a base PS5!) and watched it a thousand times, and I still can’t get enough.”

Senior technical animator at CD Projekt RED, Julius Girbig, has also spoken about how the new features made available to the studio thanks to the release of Unreal Engine 5.6 help his work as an artist, despite him “not actually digging into code that much.” He did mention that he was able to create and refine “hundreds of characters” thanks to tools like the latest version of MetaHuman Creator.

“It just unlocks me as an artist,” said Girbirg. “Now, with this engine, it suddenly unlocks me to create much bigger things and think bigger. It’s really, really awesome to be able to use things like the nanite foliage to create these vast forests and whatever comes to your mind, and it will be available for everyone.”

CD Projekt RED has referred to its ambitions with The Witcher 4, calling it “the most immersive and ambitious” game in the franchise. In its press release unveiling the tech demo, the company said that it was able to run what we saw in the trailer on a base PS5 while still maintaining 60 frames per second, despite having ray tracing enabled.

The Witcher 4 was announced all the way back in December 2024 during The Game Awards. The announcement was made through a trailer that introduced us to Ciri as the primary protagonist going forward. While the move has been seen by some as a controversial one, the voice actor for the previous protagonist, Geralt, has told these people to “read the damn books”.

The game doesn’t currently have a release date yet, but CD Projekt has previously said that it won’t be launched before 2027 at the earliest.
