Team17 has been on the receiving end of widespread backlash for its view on NFTs, but has now walked back on those plans.

NFTs have been one of those topics that get a lot of attention, for better or worse. While big publishers like Square Enix and Ubisoft are very much interested to dip their toes into it, there are many others who think otherwise, which includes audiences and many in the industry as well.

Team17, the developers and publishers of the Worms franchise, recently announced an NFT project called MetaWorms, which naturally got a lot of heat from partner developers and audiences alike.

Unsurprisingly, Team17 has now announced that they are pulling the plug on the NFT project. Posted on their official Twitter, the developers and publishers confirmed that they will not be pursuing the project and will be stepping away from the NFT space after a lot of people showed concern over the announcement.

For now, the decision seems final, though whether Team17 wants to go back to the NFT space down the line remains to be seen.

Team17 is one of many who have publicly walked back on NFT-related plans due to public backlash, including the likes of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 developer GSC Game World. Of late, publishers such as EA and Sega have also seemingly attempted to distance themselves from their previous enthusiastic views on the NFT space.

Team17 is today announcing an end to the MetaWorms NFT project.

We have listened to our Teamsters, development partners, and our games’ communities, and the concerns they’ve expressed, and have therefore taken the decision to step back from the NFT space.

The highly respected and long lived independent developers, Team 17, has announced that their brand new title Flockers will finally be making its debut appearance on the Xbox One and Playstation 4 later in the month. For those of you who can’t wait until that time, the game is available right now via Steam through the early access program.

Team 17 are the folks responsible for the smash hit multi-platform phenomenon, Worms. So it should come as no surprise that their most recent game is set to continue the legacy of absolutely pitch black humour and utter insanity. Flockers is a new spin on the tried and proven A to B puzzle game format, very much in the vain of Lemmings the player takes control of a flock of sheep and must guide them to safety through a number of “dark, heinous puzzles” and if you’re good enough, 6 secret levels.

Gamers in Europe can find the game at retail and via digital download from their preferred platform as of September, those of us in the US will sadly have to wait a bit longer until September 23rd when the game is made available via digital download.

Team 17 has also revealed that they have plans to bring the early access brawler, Overruled!, to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Overruled is in development by the indie dev team Dlala Studios.

Development team Team17, famous for their work on the Worms franchise, have announced that they are working on a new franchise and that the first game in this new IP will be out soon, making it their first new IP in a decade. The game is titled Flockers.

Team17 MD Debbie Bestwick said, “This is the most important game we’ve worked on in over a decade.” She announced the existence of this game during today’s PlayStation Open Day in Royal Leamington Spa, and said that an official announcement will be made by Team17 soon.

However, that’s all we know yet. We know nothing else. We don’t know what the game will be about, what genre it will be, what systems it will be on and when it will release. However, we’re expecting most of that information to be provided to us when the game is officially announced by the devs.

Microsoft has finally revealed the first few ID@Xbox titles to arrive for the Xbox One. The program is Microsoft’s official indie development process and will kick off with Ninjabee’s Nutjitsu and a new Worms game from Team 17.

Nutjitsu is currently available for Windows Phone OS and sees a ninja squirrel trying to outsmart foxes and stealing acorns. The game functions a lot like a puzzle game with a top-down, maze-like format but allows you to fight back against opponents using power-ups and whatnot akin to Pac-Man.

The new Worms game doesn’t have many new details as of now but Team 17, the developer behind all the other games in the series, are working on it.

Both games will be releasing in March and more ID@Xbox titles are expected to be revealed before then to officially herald the Xbox One’s indie effort. Do the initial games look appealing thus far? Let us know below.

How the worm has turned.

Aside from rereleasing some of the most games of the late 90s and early 2000s onto consoles, Team 17 have been rather silent over the past few years. Once one of the stalwarts of the British video game industry, a rare example of a studio which hasn’t amalgamated into a gigantic, throbbing hivemind then taken out behind the bins and shot, or simply fizzled out of existence. Team 17 instead have adapted to suit their means whilst still staying true to their roots. Neither radically re-imagined like Rayman, or unfortunately absent like Crash, Worms Revolution represents the studio’s impressive ability to adjust for the times, not only being the first iteration to be designed specifically for this generation but Team 17’s first ever non-retail game.

Worms Revolution presents itself with a three-pronged attack: Matt Berry, environmental water and a class system. Berry, known for his lacklustre Chris Morris impression in The IT Crowd and exactly the same bit-part character in The Mighty Boosh, his most definable quality being his voice. On paper, this is a marriage made in heaven and with even barely-adequate writing it should work without a hitch but somehow it just doesn’t. His delivery lacks any comic timing, both heavily stressing largely irrelevant words whilst neglecting those which matter. The writing isn’t exactly bad either, unlikely to win any awards but on such a budget, nobody is at fault other than Berry himself.

Environments have been given a very welcome visual upgrade too; surfaces now possess the cloth-finish of LittleBigPlanet, with similar explosions to boot. The environmental damage, again, is far more believable, also impacting on the plane behind the 2D one in which the Worms inhabit, giving further depth. Much effort has also been put into background action, tailored to one of four themes, bringing each level to life, giving it a little context however unnecessary it may be. They’re not exactly varied in terms of theme, but given that Worms has never been particularly hot for this, it’s a rather welcome addition with equally relevant music to match.

Water now exists beyond the Boggy depths of the death lake, now encased within the level itself. Providing an extra dimension to gameplay, water now acts in a similar fashion to poison, granting a -5 health penalty for each turn spent underwater whilst also limiting worm’s movement. The water physics aren’t half bad either, little water globules engulfing worms with a smack of A Bug’s Life and washing them to a wet death. Aside from water, objects now inhabit the environment as more than destructible shapes, many of which move when struck, some emitting poison, water or a gigantic explosion. These doesn’t impact on gameplay heavily, but help to make Worms Revolution feel a little more modern and current.

Classes now worm their way into Revolution for the first time, each with a distinct silhouette. The Heavy, hilariously bloated in size and movement, soon to turn into a beautiful butterfly, has larger health and understandably packs more of a punch. Scouts are petite and swift, inhabiting the nooks and crannies which other worms can only dream of, at the expense of health. Morbo’s formidable forehead belongs to the Scientistic worm, granted health bonuses and additional turret damage. Also is the solider, your Boggy standard classic worm. Evident is the fact Team 17 have spent much time making each unique, whilst all still possessing an indefinable oblivious charm in their movement and demeanour, inching along with nary a care in the world, soon to be Concrete Donkey’ed into submission.

One trick which seems to have been missed a lack of new weapons, few and far between but with our old favourites returning, except for the ludicrous Armageddon. The key addition is Boggy B, the stalwart hero of all wormkind, with a move not entirely dissimilar to Solid Snake’s final smash in Super Smash Bros Brawl. His ability to throw a grenade anywhere on the map can cause unexpected havoc, at the expense of a King’s ransom, also serving an excellent final insult to your enemy. The Plughole drains water from given area, useful for those living below the water line, harking back to the very charms which endeared us to Worms in the first place. The detail of many of these weapons is a treat for the eye too, be it the shockwave caused by some of the larger explosions, or the lovely particle physics brought on by missile trails and explosion smoke.

The biggest disappointment is the inclusion of ‘Memes’ as a choice of worm voice, previously one of the most humorous portions of worms, although in reality more a hideous indictment of 2012 than worms themselves, it’s just a shame to see such a cancerous growth penetrate a previously untouched bubble of sanctuary. Some buttons are also a little unintuitive, zoom happens in stages rather than being continuous, although this is a minor niggle at the very worst.

A Worms Revolution this isn’t, but what it is is Worms. Add a friend or three and you’re still unlikely to have more fun kicking 6 shades of grey out of each other than on any other game. Perhaps guilty of merely wallowing in the waters of its forefathers but what better to wallow in than a pool of dead worms?

Mastertronic today announced Worms Collection will be making its way to PS3 and Xbox 360 this autumn.

The collection, featuring Worms, Worms 2 Armageddon and Worms Ultimate Mayhem comes to retail 31st August for the Xbox 360 and 7th September for PlayStation 3.

Worms

The classic 2D strategy game that started it all, Worms is here in all its HD glory! Worms is an addictive mix of strategy and arcade-action that, while simple and easy to understand, contains real depth and massive replay-ability. Featuring endless fun with offline and online turn-based play for up to 4 players, this is golden-age gaming at its comically violent best!

Worms 2 Armageddon

Pushing the cartoon carnage into overdrive, Worms 2 Armageddon comes with stunning new visuals and an arsenal of apocalyptic arms. Introducing Super Sheep, Napalm Strikes, Earthquakes, and the legendary Concrete Donkey, Worms 2 Armageddon is an exercise in extreme execution. Including five expansions previously sold separately, this is a can of worms you’ll never want to close!

Worms Ultimate Mayhem

Worms Ultimate Mayhem is a souped-up, re-vamped, high definition reimagining of Worms 3D and Worms 4: Mayhem, bringing both games together in one incredibly over-stuffed, over-the-top package. Including all of the content from the original games, Worms Ultimate Mayhem also brings a whole host of anarchic additions – more single player missions, more puzzles, more customisation, more worms!

This collection entails: Worms, Worms Ultimate Mayhem, Worms 2: Armageddon as well as 6 bits of tasty DLC, all slapped onto one big, delicious disk.

The Worms games, first featuring in 1995, are one of the last bastions of the eccentric, quintessentially English games of the 90’s. Brimming with charm and with no real reason for them to exist, the Worms games have very much stood the test of time, with Worms Revolution on its way later this year.

There isn’t yet an RRP of sorts, but publishers Mastertronic have been quoted as saying the bundle will be at a “price you can’t afford to miss.’ We’ll see about that.

Here’s a new video for the upcoming game in the long running Worms series, Worms: Ultimate Mayhem. The video shows some typical Worms crazy footage, some dialogues that will bring a smile to your face, and some footage that has to be the most bizarre thing I have ever seen.

Here’s some info on the game as given by the devs:

“Worms: Ultimate Mayhem” is the definitive 3D “Worms” game!

Load your weapons and experience a whole new dimension in destructive turn-based cartoon action! Taking the game into 3D creates all-new strategic and gameplay possibilities.

With over 70 single-player missions and challenges, online and local multiplayer for up to 4 players, 5 multi-player modes, Achievements/Trophies, unprecedented customization of both worms and weapons, and fully destructible environments, it’s bursting with anarchic mayhem.

Battle and puzzle your way through all of the missions from both “Worms 3D” and “Worms 4: Mayhem” – it’s essentially two games in one. With the addition of HD visuals, gameplay enhancements and new extra content, it is the ultimate 3D “Worms” collection!

Worms: Ultimate Mayhem releases in two days’ time for PC, and will release in Q4 2011 on Xbox 360 and PS3. Stay tuned for more info.

Team 17 has announced that the Worms franchise will be making a comeback on the PC this August.

The Worms will be back on August 26.

And don’t fix what isn’t broken, right? The developers have said that they won’t be making many changes to the core mechanics when the little critters crawl onto screens in all their 2D goodness later this month.

The main new features come in the form of new weapons. While there will be many of the classics- armageddon, concrete donkeys, napalm strikes, and the holy hand grenades- some new ways to disembowl your fellow Worm will also be available in Reloaded, such as poison strikes, electromagnets, ferrets and sentry guns.

Check out the trailer below.

Team 17, the developers behind the cult classic, Worms, are bringing out their latest game on Apple’s handhelds. Although Worms is currently available for the iPhone with full multiplayer compatibility and the full arsenal of weapons, Worms Express srips out the multiplayer and some of the weapons in exchange for a more interesting single player experience- and a lower pricetag. Worms Express is currently retailing from the App Store at just $1.

For those interested in the original Worms, or who already own it, you will be pleased to know that a slew of new features will be added to the game shortly. In the update an all-new single player mode called Survival is the most significant addition. However Bluetooth functionality has been added as well as a new playlist feature that lets you customize your soundtrack in-game according to your own music. The update will be released sometime this month.
