Team17 Decides to Cancel NFT Project After Backlash

Team17 has been on the receiving end of widespread backlash for its view on NFTs, but has now walked back on those plans.

NFTs have been one of those topics that get a lot of attention, for better or worse. While big publishers like Square Enix and Ubisoft are very much interested to dip their toes into it, there are many others who think otherwise, which includes audiences and many in the industry as well.

Team17, the developers and publishers of the Worms franchise, recently announced an NFT project called MetaWorms, which naturally got a lot of heat from partner developers and audiences alike.

Unsurprisingly, Team17 has now announced that they are pulling the plug on the NFT project. Posted on their official Twitter, the developers and publishers confirmed that they will not be pursuing the project and will be stepping away from the NFT space after a lot of people showed concern over the announcement.

For now, the decision seems final, though whether Team17 wants to go back to the NFT space down the line remains to be seen.

Team17 is one of many who have publicly walked back on NFT-related plans due to public backlash, including the likes of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 developer GSC Game World. Of late, publishers such as EA and Sega have also seemingly attempted to distance themselves from their previous enthusiastic views on the NFT space.
