The Elder Scrolls Online is Adding Dynamic Resolution Scaling and a New HDR Mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S

In performance mode, on PS5 and Xbox Series X, the resolution will scale between 1080p and 2160p, while on Xbox Series S, it will scale between 1080p and 1440p.

The Elder Scrolls Online saw the launch of native PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions couple of months ago, but soon, developer Zenimax Online Studio will be further improving the game’s visual fidelity on the new consoles, thanks to new features being added in with the upcoming Update 31.

The most significant addition will be dynamic resolution scaling, with the developers wanting to ensure that the game can run at higher resolutions even when targeting 60 FPS in performance mode. As such, on PS5 and Xbox Series X, in performance mode, The Elder Scrolls Online will soon be scaling between 1080p and 2160p, depending on performance metrics. On Xbox Series S, the game will scale between 1080p and 1440p. The developer says this should also help prevent dropped frames.

Meanwhile, a new HDR mode is also being added in, described as “a new hue-preserving” mode that “very closely matches the look of ESO in SDR while taking advantage of the increased range.” The current HDR mode will still remain in the game as an option for those who want to stick with it though.

Finally, the game’s PC version is also adding a multithreaded rendering beta. “The launch of ESO on the new generation consoles brought with it many improvements to our render threading to achieve 60fps in our performance modes,” the developer writes. “In Update 31, we are bringing our console render multithreading to PC via a new opt-in beta setting. For those of you who are CPU limited while playing ESO (most of you), this setting should improve your frame rate.”

The Elder Scrolls Online’s PC, Mac, and Stadia versions will be getting Update 31 on August 23, and the console versions on August 31.
