The Wolf Among  Us is an upcoming adventure game that is currently in development under Telltale Games, the same studio that developed the massively successful episodic video game adaptation of The Walking Dead.  Like The Walking Dead, The Wolf Among Us is to be released in an episodic format, meaning that rather than having one bundled launch as a single retail entity, the game is set to release in five separate episodes. The Wolf Among Us is a video game adaptation of the Fables series of comic books.

It is also going to be canon. Meaning that its story will be considered officially recognized as part of the comic book’s already existing universe and its contents.  The first episode is set to release on Microsoft Windows, OS X and Xbox 360 on October 11th 2013 in North America, details surrounding the release dates for the PlayStation 3 in North America and Europe have not been confirmed yet, but according to Telltale games they are “expected to be just a few days after the initial Xbox 360 and PC releases go live.”

Development

Telltale Games revealed that they were currently working on a title that was based on the comic book series called “Fables”. The game was given its official title of “The Wolf Among Us” in February of 2013. Throughout its development process The Wolf Among Us was delayed several times after Telltale’s “The Walking Dead” was received with high review scores and huge sales numbers of over 8.5 million units.

The first instalment of The Wolf Among Us was set to arrive sometime in the first quarter of 2012, then being delayed and pushed back until the third quarter of 2012, then the third quarter of 2013 before finally coming to a rest on October 11th 2013. Although development was delayed because of the continued success of The Walking Dead, Telltale still admitted that the game was taking longer than originally predicted to develop.

Gameplay

The gameplay of The Wolf Among Us is very similar and heavily influenced by that of The Walking Dead. Everything in the game is centred around a system of choices and the consequences of those that you make. While the game plays out, the player will take control of Bigby Wolf, as his story unfolds in front of you, you’re going to be presented with on screen button prompts. Each of which represents a choice for you to make, these choices will ultimately impact how your story unfolds and how Bigby develops as a character.

The Wolf Among Us shares the same art style as The Walking Dead, the cel shaded styling’s of Telltale’s artists brings a lot of depth to the fictional world that Bill Willingham brought to life through his comic books. This world is inhabited by the fictional characters often found in children’s stories around the world, and this is where the game’s plot comes into play. Bigby Wolf will be trying to keep these fictional beings from being discovered by every day folk, known as “mundies”, or non-fairy folk. But while doing this, your choices will also shape whether or not he will give in to his Wolf-ish instincts or remain friendly and useful to those around him.

This closely knit group of fictional characters are of course one of the game’s driving gameplay mechanics, much like they were in The Walking Dead. Not all the members of your little society get along well with the others, and it’s up to the player to make the decisions that they deem most fitting. Some encounters in the game result in a combat sequence that takes the form of a series of quick time events (QTE), during these QTE’s the player must move a targeting reticule to the designated on screen marker and press the relevant buttons. This will drive the sequence forward with a scripted gameplay portion.

The film-noir style of the game’s writing, camera work and art style make the gameplay both compelling and at times truly troubling. Some of the choices that the player must make are obvious good and bad decisions, whereas others will present the player with a lesser of two evils type of choice to make.

Episodes

Episode 1 of The Wolf Among Us is titled “Faith”.

A great deal of characters from children’s fairy tales have relocated and moved into a downtown Manhattan area that goes by the name of Fabletown. Bigby Wolf, formerly known as The Big Bad Wolf is the acting Sheriff of this district and he becomes embroiled in a gruesome murder investigation that involves one of his fellow “Fables”.  With one of his fellow Fables having been murdered, Bigby’s role as their protector comes into question and his career as well as the lives of his friends become threatened.

There are four more episodes scheduled to be released which will be titled as Smoke and Mirrors, A Crooked Mile, In Sheep’s Clothing and Cry Wolf.

Characters

  • Bigby – Bigby Wolf appears to be human but is in fact one of the most famous characters to ever be stricken with Lycanthropy, he is also known as “The Big Bad Wolf”. Bigby Wolf is the Sheriff of his local area and is the players main character. He is set with the task of protecting the “Fables” as they live in Fabletown, an area of Manhattan.
  • Little Red Riding Hood – The red cloaked maiden from children’s lore and bed time stories makes a return in this game.
  • The Woodsman – The axe wielding lumberjack from Little Red Riding Hood’s bed time tale makes an appearance in this game, this time as a large and abusive man.
  • Toad – Toads have appeared in many stories told as fables, little is currently known about this little toad-man, but what we do know is that he cannot afford a human transformation and is quite fond of stealing other people’s cars.
