Development

The rumors that Respawn was working on a Titanfall 2 started circulating almost immediately after the original Titanfall was released. Chief among those rumors is the sequel would not be console exclusive to Microsoft’s platform. EA was also claimed to be the publisher of this sequel. All of those rumors ended up being true when the game was officially announced on March of 2015.

While the game was in the initial stages of development, the team at Respawn had been looking at launching a companion Titanfall 2 science fiction series but those plans eventually fell through. On June 12, 2016 the game got its official release date as Respawn said it would be coming on October 28, 2016. Before the official release, the development team hosted a couple of betas that were meant to show what the full game might hold as well as test the servers.

The first beta contained two modes and two maps and was released on August 19, 2016. This beta ended two days later on August 21. The second beta kicked off on August 26 and ended on August 28. Titanfall 2, like the first game is using a kind of modified  version of the Source game engine. This new title also has a custom audio solution as well as a texture streaming system that was created entirely in-house by Respawn. While most of these features were created specifically for the original Titanfall they have been adapted and improved for the second game.

One of the biggest features of this game is that the developers have included a single player mode which has a full-fledged story mode. The developers have also said there will be additional maps and new modes which will be released post launch and most of them will be free of charge.

While all the additional maps and classes will be available for all players free of charge, Respawn and EA did allow for those who preorder the game to get access to some of the new maps, such as Angel City earlier than the rest of the public. There have been other features, such as the ability to decorate Titans differently offered in the preorder.

Story

While the first Titanfall had a kind of story running underneath the multiplayer mode, it wasn’t very detailed or important to the gameplay. The big difference in this sequel is that there is a single player campaign and an immersive story to go along with it.

This story puts the player in the role of Jack Cooper, who when the game starts, is a lowly militia soldier who has not yet advanced to the rank of pilot. This dream becomes a reality far quicker than the soldier imagines when his commanding officer is killed during a battle with the opposing faction.

After the battle, Cooper and the commanding officer’s former Titan, BT-7274, referred to as simply BT throughout the rest of the story, go on a wide ranging adventure that lasts about six hours of gametime. The story is said to better explain why the two factions are constantly squaring off and provide other back story points that were missing from the original Titanfall.

Gameplay

There are several different modes and they all have some variation of the same kind of play that was seen in the original Titanfall. The modes that are contained in the Titanfall 2 are:

  • Attrition
  • Bounty Hunt
  • Pilot vs. Pilot
  • Skirmish
  • Amped Hardpoint
  • Capture the Flag
  • Last Titan Standing
  • Free for All
  • Private Match
  • Ground War – mixed modes
  • Variety Pack – mixed modes
  • Coliseum – requires entry tickets

The multiplayer mode also allows players to join “networks” where they can be regularly placed on the same factions as their friends. There are also several maps that will allow players to do battle throughout. The development team has said they will be bringing more maps to the game as the year goes on.

They have also said there will be new modes eventually added to the game and that all these games and modes will be offered as free DLC. So far, the development team has not said what these new maps and modes will be or when they will dropping that additional content.

Characters

Jack Cooper is the main protagonist and is the character users will play as. He is a militia man who advances to the rank of pilot after his commanding officer is killed in battle. BT-7274 is the Titan who an amalgam of other famous robots from television and the movies.

These are the two main characters that the players will get to know throughout the story of the single player mode. There are also a number of NPCs the players will meet throughout the title’s gameplay.
