While Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the third and final entry in the reboot trilogy of the famed franchise, has already been announced, Eidos Montréal Studio Head David Anfossi has promised a surprise for Tomb Raider fans relating to the game anyway, which will be announced at E3. This surprise, he hastens to add, will show fans how this new game is different from the previous two so far.
“I believe that—maybe you should stay tuned for E3,” he said, in an interview with GamesBeat. “You’ll understand what we did to make sure that there’s something new and very interesting and, I believe, surprising for Tomb Raider fans. But you’re right. It’s a big challenge to be the third game or the second game. Definitely a challenge.”
It does make sense- when you’re following up two successful and beloved games, fans already have an idea of what to expect, which means the onus is on you as the creator to come up with new ways to surprise them.
One way that Eidos could surprise fans, of course, is by tying the new games into the original series- but, for example, they have already confirmed that Lara won’t get her iconic dual pistols in this game, so that, while it may have been a surprise, is out for this one. I wonder what they will do.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider launches on PS4, Xbox One, and PC on September 14.
