Details about the upcoming Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 have been revealed thanks to an interview with the developers during the PC Gaming Show. In the interview, Saber Interactive’s Tim Willits and Oliver Hollis talk about bringing the Warhammer 40,000 setting to life in Space Marine 2.
Willits, having previously worked with id Software on Doom, compares a Space Marine with Doomguy. Willits mentions that in the original concept, Doomguy was based on Warhammer 40,000’s Space Marines, with the influences being visible in Doomguy’s armour.
Hollis then speaks about how the new version of Tidus in Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2—a Primaris Marine—is different from other incarnations of Space Marines.
Willits speaks about Saber Interactive’s proprietary Saber Swarm engine that allows the game to have massive hordes of enemies for the player to fight. Since Space Marine 2‘s primary antagonists will be the Tyranids, players can expect to fight through swarms of the aliens in the name of the Emperor.
Space Marine 2‘s combat is going to take a page from its predecessor’s combat system, where the player is constantly encouraged to engage in fights rather than hiding behind cover. Players will have a choice between melee combat and ranged combats, with a Space Marine’s typical arsenal to choose from.
The duo then talk about visiting Games Workshop’s Warhammer Museum, where different dioramas are set up using the miniatures from the tabletop Warhammer games. Each diorama is set up to be a tableau from iconic battles in the Warhammer settings.
In a recent developer update, Saber Interactive spoke about how Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 will stay true to its setting. The game is set for release on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. It doesn’t yet have a release date.
