Watch Dogs Legion – DedSec Progression And Character Levelling Up Detailed

Creative director Clint Hocking talks about various facets of progression in the upcoming open world title.

Watch Dogs Legion’s “play as anyone” mechanic has certainly caught the attention of great many people. It’s a mechanic that promises to have a major impact on gameplay, and with something like permadeath thrown in for good measure, it has the potential to really change the way you interact with the game.

We’ve already heard about how that will affect the game’s story and how much of a focus storytelling will still be (it’ll still be big focus, apparently), but what about stuff on the gameplay side of things? For instance, how does being able to control and play as multiple characters from a pool of (potentially) infinite- how does that affect progression?

Speaking with GamingBolt, the game’s creative director Clint Hocking answered that question, mentioning that players will be levelling up individual characters and also progressing DedSec at the same time, while also explaining how the entire process would work.

“Absolutely,” said Hocking, when asked if every character we recruit and play as would also be upgradeable. “Every character is trained in one of the three Classes as soon as they join DedSec, and every character has their own progression. They level up and gain perks and abilities over time. Your investment in your individual characters is very much about playing with them, seeing them move through the story of the game, and levelling them up over time.

“At the same time, DedSec has its own progression, and all of your characters also get more powerful as DedSec is upgraded, so losing an individual Operative is more about losing a character and access to their specific playstyle, as opposed to losing progression and finding yourself underpowered against the enemy.”

Watch Dogs Legion is out on March 6 next year for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. Our complete interview with Hocking will be up soon, so stay tuned for the whole thing.
