The May NPD results came out yesterday, and on the whole, it appears everyone seems to have won.
Watch Dogs topped the sales charts, predictably enough, scoring a comfortable first place in the All Formats Charts. It sold over 1.25 million copies in the US last month, with 46% of those sales coming for the PS4 SKU, 29% for the Xbox One version, and 14% and 11% for the Xbox 360 and PS3 respectively.
Mario Kart 8 also scored a major victory, coming in #2 overall- this is notable for three reasons. 1) Mario Kart 8 was released on May 29, so only two days worth of sales are counted. 2) Mario Kart 8’s audience is limited by the tiny Wii U install base, and 3) it topped other major multiplat releases of the month, such as Wolfenstein and MLB The Show.
PlayStation 4 was a comfortable first place in the hardware charts, with 3DS ending in second place, selling more than the Xbox One, that nonetheless managed to sell more than a newly resurgent Wii U. PS3 sales suffered, selling less than 50,000 units, and being outsold not just by the Xbox 360, but also the PlayStation Vita, which, in a stunning reversal of fortunes, sold 56,000 units last month.
The breakdown of hardware charts is:
- PlayStation 4
- Nintendo 3DS
- Xbox One
- Wii U
- Xbox 360
- PlayStation Vita
- PlayStation 3
- Wii
