Development

In May of 2015, rumors began swirling that the announcement for WWE 2K16 was right around the corner. Those rumors included a release date of October, as has been the release month for previous games in the series. In June, the game was officially announced along with several members of the upcoming roster. The game is said to have around 120 wrestlers, including several that will be coming in the form of DLC from outside the WWE universe. WWE 2K16 has almost twice as many wrestlers than WWE 2K15 which was the first game that was offered on the current generation consoles.

The soundtrack for the game, often a signature of the series will have quite a few songs that will be a bit of a throwback tune such as Billy Idol’s “Rebel Yell.” Other artists with songs in the soundtrack are Marilyn Manson, Skid Row, Run DMC and Diplo. The overall soundtrack includes:

  • “Rebel Yell” – Billy Idol
  • “Revolution”- Diplo featuring Faustix & Imanos and Kai
  • “Something to Believe In” -Fashawn featuring Nas and Aloe Blacc
  • “Hello World” – Kid Ink
  • “Deep Six” – Marilyn Manson
  • “A Little More” – Machine Gun Kelly featuring Victoria Monet
  • “It’s Tricky” – Run D.M.C.
  • “Youth Gone Wild” – Skid Row
  • “Heavydirtysoul” – Twenty One Pilots
  • “Till It’s Gone (Dan Heath remix)” – Yelawolf
  • “Heavy Is the Head” – Zac Brown Band featuring Chris Cornell
  • “Transmission” – Zedd featuring Logic and X Ambassadors

Story

The storyline behind WWE 2K16 has not been revealed yet. There will be some stories to go along with the wrestling matches but no details about what to expect have been announced. There are a number of modes such as WWE Universe and MyCareer that will also have stories and narratives depending on what happens in the game. Both of these modes will be similar in storyline to what WWE 2k15 offered.

Gameplay

The gameplay of WWE 2K16 will feature a number of different modes. Because this is a game that is part of a long running series, the focus has been on improving and tweaking modes that players have seen in previous versions of the game instead of adding brand new modes. MyCareer will allow players to create themselves or a fictional character as a professional wrestler in the organization. There is a tool in the game that actually lets people scan their face and bring it into the game as one of the wrestlers. WWE Universe is another mode that allows your character to star in the organization through the entertainment angle more than the wrestling angle. The mode also integrates a number of cut scenes and rivalries between wrestlers based on the matches that are wrestled and the appearances these characters make on various shows. This mode will allow for one character to be booked in numerous shows for the first time.

Creative Suite has been brought back to WWE 2K16. This was a feature of previous iterations in the series but it was removed from WWE 2k15. 2K sports and Visual Concepts have made comments that they want to bring back a number of features they had to remove from WWE 2K15 for a number of different reasons. Ladder tag team, handicap tag team, and tornado tag matches are other gameplay modes that were taken out of WWE 2K15 but have been added back for WWE 2K16. There have also been some tweaks to what can be accomplished inside these different modes. Reversals are said to have been set so there is a certain number players will have to use. This change comes after players were caught “spamming” online games by using reversals throughout the match, even when it wouldn’t fit into the way a match would normally be fought.

Loading screens have been removed from the game when it comes to the walk-in scenes and wrestlers can now attack their opponents during these scenes. The developers say that both referee and manager AI have been improved in order to give players a more realistic feel when comparing this game to the actual WWE. Finally, Pins and submissions have been reworked and improved, according to 2K Sports. The new system is set to replace the one that was featured in the previous couple of games. The tweak is said to work when it comes to allowing for fairer breakouts. Newer animations for these moves have been added to the game as well.

Commentary for the matches as they are going on have been changed as well, and a third broadcaster has been added to the commentator team. John Bradshaw Layfield is added to the game in order to give his commentary alongside the returning Michael Cole and Jerry Lawler.

Roster

The developers have said that there are going to be more than 120 wrestlers in the game with even more wrestlers being added through DLC. Some of the wrestlers are stars of the WWE as well as the Divas. Other characters are going to be from outside the universe. Arnold Schwarzenegger is also featured in his role of the Terminator for those who pre-order the game. Despite the large reported roster, there are just a handful of wrestlers and Divas that have been confirmed:

  • Bad News Barrett
  • Booker T
  • Colonel Mustafa
  • Daniel Bryan
  • Dean Ambrose
  • Emma
  • Eva Marie
  • Finn Bálor
  • General Adnan
  • Kalisto
  • Kane
  • Lord Steven Regal
  • Seth Rollins
  • Sin Cara
  • Summer Rae
  • Stone Cold
  • Tamina
  • Triple H
  • Paige

One character that has been confirmed to have been removed from the game is Hulk Hogan. The former wrestling star has come under fire for recent racist comments and 2K Sports says he has officially been removed from the game.
