Xbox One Check-In Requirements Measured in “Kilobytes, Not Megabytes”

Microsoft Games Studio head Phil Spencer talks about staying true to their policies.

Corporate VP of Microsoft Studios and Microsoft Games Studios head Phil Spencer finally confirmed the check-in requirements for the Xbox One, which must connect online every 24 hours to authenticate. Speaking to Game Informer, Spencer stated that the bandwidth requirements are in “kilobytes, not megabytes. You can also set your console to always have the latest bits in a standby state.”

This means that even if you want to tether your Xbox One to your smartphone to authenticate it, you won’t face any issues. Spencer also stated that those without internet access shouldn’t be looking at the Xbox One but that even those with lesser connections aren’t being totally shut out.

“We’ve all had 360s for quite a while. If you look at what the box was capable of doing when we launched it versus what it’s doing it now, we listened. We’re part of the community.

“We listen to the community and we will respond to where the business, the creators, and the gamers are going. But I don’t want to people to take that wrong. Our policy is our policy, and we’ve stated it. We wanted to put it up [on Xbox Wire] in unambiguous terms. ‘Here’s what our policy is.'”

Nevertheless, issues regarding used game sales, class action waiver and an always on Kinect remain to be resolved.
