Microsoft had promised that Xbox One games would be playable on the Oculus Rift headset in a sort of cinema mode, not dissimilar to Sony’s Cinema Mode on PlayStation VR for even regular PS4 games. Now, we finally know when this functionality will be made available- starting December 12, Xbox One owners will be able to stream their Xbox One library to Oculus Rift headsets.
Now, it is important to remember that playing a standard game in VR does not make it a VR game- in fact, it just replicates the experience of playing it on a gigantic screen. Moreover, the experience is likely to not be as effective as if the game were being played locally, simply because streaming will introduce some latency, and latency in VR can be detrimental to the experience.
Still, until Microsoft’s native VR strategy comes into focus with the launch of the Scorpio next year, it looks like this is the best that Xbox owners can get. It’s a neat little bonus, if nothing else.
