Xbox One May Not Support Cross-Platform Voice Chat

Xbox One and Xbox 360 users may not be able to Party or voice chat with each other.

A Reddit user recently inquired as to whether Xbox One users would be able to Party Chat with Xbox 360 users. Essentially, whether cross-platform voice chat would be supported by the next-generation console or not.

Surprisingly, this may not be the case. Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb responded that, “I’ve asked – based on what I know of the voice system, I would be surprised if this was possible. The Xbox One uses an all new wide bandwidth (read: better voice quality) CODEC, so I doubt they are compatible.”

Why doesn’t Hryb try it out on his own Xbox One and Xbox 360? Well, that’s because his console is currently running on “non-final code”. So while there’s a good chance that users across different Xbox platforms won’t be able to voice chat, there’s still a bit of hope that this won’t be the case – if not at launch, then perhaps somewhere down the line.

The ironic thing? After Sony got hammered in the last generation for no cross-game chat on the PS3, Microsoft is now facing voice chat woes. At least users will be able to text each other (or so we hope).
