Though we can make guesses of what the PS5 and the Xbox Series X will cost based on what we know of their hardware, Microsoft and Sony themselves haven’t really said anything concrete on that front. If you’re among the group of people who’re hoping that the next-gen machines will launch at a relatively lower price, the recent words of industry analyst Michael Pachter might give you hope- well, on the Xbox Series X side of things at any rate.
Speaking recently to Geoff Keighley on Periscope about what the two consoles will cost, Pachter said that though it’s looking likely that the PS5 will cost $500, Microsoft – owing to their larger finances – might be willing to take a hit on their console and sell the Xbox Series X for a much lower price of $400 to undercut the competition.
“From what I’ve seen, Sony’s going to have to charge $500 for their PS5, and Microsoft has a big balance sheet,” said Pachter. “If they want to cut the price by $100, just price below and subsidize the first ten million, they will.”
As mentioned, Microsoft and Sony have both remained silent on what their consoles will cost up until now. Sony has suggested that the PS5’s price hasn’t yet been determined, while according to Microsoft, even though the Xbox Series X was designed with specific price in mind, how much it will cost is something they plan to remain “agile” on.
