Ryu ga Gotoku Studio’s Yakuza: Like A Dragon faced some skepticism before launch for its turn-based RPG combat. However, it seems to have worked out well enough. After debuting in Japan with almost 157,000 units sold at retail, series general director Toshihiro Nagoshi recently announced on the Sega Nama broadcast that the game has crossed 300,000 units in total shipments and digital sales.
The last mainline Yakuza title, Yakuza 6: The Song of Life, shipped 500,000 copies within eight days of its launch. While the numbers for Yakuza: Like A Dragon are smaller over a slightly longer period of time, it’s worth noting that it features a brand new protagonist and mechanics over the series’ traditional heroes and combat. We’ll see how sales pan out in the long run.
Yakuza: Like A Dragon launched on January 16th for PS4 in Japan. It’s slated to release in the West later this year. Stay tuned for more details on a release date in the coming months. The Yakuza series will also be debuting on Xbox One, with Yakuza 0, Yakuza Kiwami, and Yakuza Kiwami 2 announced for Xbox Game Pass.
