Activision CEO Says Call of Duty Franchise “Not Immune” to Less Pre-orders

Eric Hirschberg believes digital consumption and decline of demand on previous gen consoles is to blame.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has been generated a fair amount of positive buzz, especially when you consider the problems Call of Duty: Ghosts faced before release. However, even though pre-orders for the former are better than the latter, Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirschberg recently told investors that the franchise is “not immune” to reduced pre-orders.

“You guys can see the same thing we see industry-wide, which is that there’s been sort of a secular downturn as it relates to pre-orders.

“We think that’s happening due to a number of factors: things like increased digital consumption, particularly on the next-gen consoles; titles being widely available on day one; and the decline overall for demand of software on the previous gen consoles.”

Of course, the question remains as to whether publishers aren’t tiring consumers with yearly releases and multiple special editions. Be that as it may, we’ll find out how this impacts Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’s success when it launches on November 4th.
