Alan Wake 2 – The Dark Place Features Characters Connected to Wake’s Books

Remedy Entertainment says the replica New York has a "lot of history", including a narrative experience involving Alice.

While September is packed with big games, October looks no less epic, especially with titles like Remedy Entertainment’s Alan Wake 2 on the horizon. The developer recently showcased Wake in The Dark Place, a nightmare reality based on a person’s subconscious. In his case, it’s a replica of New York City.

In a recent behind-the-scenes video, Remedy revealed that it’s an “echo” of the New York that appears in Wake’s Alex Casey series. It contains a “lot of history”, from a narrative experience with his wife Alice to characters that are “kind of” connected to his books.

There’s also Nightmare Graffiti, based on “very old school” graffiti from the 70s and 80s. “If you pay attention to details, even the smallest sign has something to say to you,” says lead environment artist Nazareno Urbano. The goal is to make it feel like The Dark Place is talking to Wake and the player and serves as a “surreal, ever-changing, ever-modulating” dreamscape.

Alan Wake 2 launches on October 27th for Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC. It was delayed by ten days to avoid clashing with Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and has been in development for four years by a team of about 130 people.
