Ubisoft has been expanding its live service catalogue quite a bit, announcing free to play titles like Tom Clancy’s XDefiant and Ghost Recon Frontline (with responses ranging from mixed to negative). However, prior to both, it confirmed that live service online platform called Assassin’s Creed Infinity was in the works. Ubisoft Montreal and Ubisoft Quebec are collaborating together to develop it and rumors indicate that it’s at least three years away from release.
But how exactly will Infinity be structured? According to Reddit user Smooth-Earth2875, it’s in the early stages of conceptualization and development but “in a solid enough state that I can confidently describe what shape the game will take.” It’s apparently inspired by the Helix from Assassin’s Creed Unity. The different entries will be small and linear but feature semi-open world environments akin to Hitman’s sandbox levels with each being dedicated to a single assassin.
Their story will play out over multiple missions, and apparently, the publisher wants to “remake and retell” the stories from older titles within Infinity (though it’s “still too early determine what older games if any will be retold”). It also seems that a brand new story will be added but for a cost and over time. Also, despite Ubisoft placing so many resources into Infinity, there will be open world Assassin’s Creed titles developed during the same period.
Given the anonymity of the source, much (if not all) of this could be fake. However, a Reddit mod noted that while the information provided could be faked, “it would take some amount of time and effort that we don’t see most leakers attempt.” So while not confirming the accuracy of the post (because keep in mind that development can change over time), the mod said that, “I will confirm that the OP shown us enough evidence that I’d be more comfortable believing this one as plausible, instead of OUTRIGHT fake or other. There is some merit, it seems.”
Time will tell just how much of this is real, how much makes it into the final product and how Ubisoft intends to monetize it. So take things with a grain of salt and stay tuned for more details in the coming years.
