Battlefield 2042 Will Have Reduced Map Sizes on PS4 and Xbox One

While PS5 and Xbox Series X/S will have large-scale maps for up to 128 players, the game's PS4 and Xbox One versions will have smaller variants of maps for a maximum of 64.

Being multiplayer-only game, Battlefield 2042 is expected to have stellar offerings in that one and only department, and with massive maps and maximum player counts of 128, as well as a major new mode that is yet to be announced, it’s clear that the game’s certainly aiming high. As you’d expect, however, the hardware of the PS4 and Xbox One isn’t able to keep up with what the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are capable of- which is going to result in some cutbacks.

Tucked away in the EA press release regarding Battlefield 2042 is the small but crucial detail that multiplayer in the game is going to be smaller in scale on last-gen consoles. How exactly? Well, on the PS4 and Xbox One, Battlefield 2042 is going to support a maximum of 64 players per match, as opposed to 128. Meanwhile, map sizes on last-gen consoles are also going to be reduced.

Well, at least the game will still cost $60, as opposed to $70 on the new consoles.

This does, of course, call into question how cross-play will be handled, or if there even will be cross-play. A recent leak claimed that Battlefield 2042 is not going to have cross-gen cross-play, and that leaked turned out to be right about everything else it mentioned.

Battlefield 2042 launches for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 22.
