Borderlands 3 Crosses 5 Million Units Sold-In, 2K Games’ Fastest-Selling Title in History

More than 70 percent of the sales were digital.

Gearbox Software’s Borderlands 3 has sold-in over five million units within its first five days of launch, according to 2K Games. It’s the highest-selling title in the label’s history and 50 percent more consumers purchased the game than its predecessor, Borderlands 2. Thanks to the sequel’s sales, the franchise has now generated over $1 billion in net bookings, making it the second 2K Games title to do so.

But wait, there’s more. Over 70 percent of consumers purchased the title digitally in the five days since launch. Not only is it the most pre-ordered 2K Games title but also the most pre-ordered on the Epic Games Store. Despite the PC version being a timed exclusive to the storefront, it’s currently the highest selling title for 2K Games on PC within a five day window.

2K Games president David Ismailer stated, “Borderlands 3’s incredibly successful launch is a result of the hard work and longstanding partnership between Gearbox Software and 2K. We are immensely grateful to everyone who played a role in making the Borderlands series the global, pop culture phenomenon that it is today, including hundreds of developers at Gearbox and many who have made this their life’s work. We also want to thank the Borderlands community. Mayhem does not happen by itself, and their passion for the series is what drives us to make each game an amazing experience.”

Though the game faced its fair share of criticism for the story and writing, critical reception has been generally strong. Check out our official review of Borderlands 3 here.
