Borderlands has always been a very social experience, having been all about their co-op looting and shooting cycle before Destiny ever came aroud and made it the trend of the market. Borderlands 3 is only going to take that one step further, with co-op and social features seeing several improvements, some of which we reported on not too long ago.
One such social feature is gifting- a simply concept, of course. You spot something you think is cool but figure isn’t something you really have much need for, and you send it over to your friends. Who doesn’t like free stuff, right? Speaking with GamingBolt in a group interview at E3 2019, the game’s senior producer at Gearbox Software, Anthony Nicholson, spoke about this gifting feature, saying that players can “send whatever” they want, and that there’s also room in this system for players to mess about with each other.
“There’s nothing in the game that people don’t like, right?” Nicholson said while speaking with GamingBolt. “You can send whatever. That goes with grenades, different shields and things like that, too. So if there is one with some type of debuff on it, or some type of dynamic change that can happen if you do a thing, stick it in there and maybe it will get past them like, ‘Oh, hey! There’s a lot of health on this.’ Then it explodes on them.”
In the same interview, Nicholson also spoke to us about the important of narrative in Borderlands 3, Gearbox’s approach to constantly ramping up weapon designs and variety, and injecting much more varied combat into the upcoming sequel. Borderlands 3 is out on September 13 for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and will be launching with Stadia in November. Though the game won’t support cross-play at launch, the developer intends on including the feature as soon as it’s “practical”.
