Borderlands Creator Leaves Gearbox Software

Matthew Armstrong leaves the developer to explore other adventures.

Borderlands has been undergoing some significant changes since the release of The Pre-Sequel. Not only has 2K Australia, which created the game, been closed but writer Anthony Burch left Gearbox to pursue other interests. Now, the original creator of Borderlands (who also wrote the first game) Matthew Armstrong announced his departure on Twitter.

“Things changed. No longer working at @GearboxSoftware. I will always love Gearbox, but it’s adventure time.”

Whatever Armstrong will be working on remains to be seen. As such, Gearbox Software has been looking for staff to work on the next big iteration of Borderlands. When it will release remains to be seen as well as if it will bear much resemblance to its predecessors.

Borderlands currently has The Handsome Collection on Xbox One and PS4, and the Claptastic Voyage DLC for The Pre-Sequel out now. What are your thoughts on Armstrong’s departure? Let us know in the comments.
