Love it or loathe it, Call of Duty has proven extremely fruitful for Activision yet again. The latest iteration in the series, Sledgehammer Games’ Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare has proven to be the biggest entertainment launching according to its publishing, notching up over $10 billion in sales. This apparently makes it more successful than The Hunger Games, Transformers, Iron Man and The Avengers put together.
While it didn’t provide total unit sales, Activision noted that season pass sales were strong and “sales and engagement are up through the first week compared to last year.” It is also the highest selling digital launch according to Xbox Live and PSN charts with 370 million matches played within the first week and 200 million level-ups and counting within multiplayer.
Of course, the game has had its share of issues. Despite promising dedicated servers, Advanced Warfare appears to be using a combination of dedicated servers and peer to peer listen servers which has resulted in complaints of lag and hit detection. Sledgehammer has been working to address all the issues though as evidenced by its latest patches.
