It wasn’t that long ago that Treyarch and Activision confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s much anticipated battle royale mode Blackout will have player count of 80 (contrasted with the 100 in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Fortnite, and 64 in Battlefield 5’s Firestorm). However, that has already been changed- in a tweet, Treyarch’s David Vonderhaar has confirmed that the player count has been upped from 80 to 88.
Why 88? Why the increase? No reason or explanation was given. We presume that Treyarch has been busy optimizing and tweaking the battle royale netcode, and that they got it to work at a satisfactory level with a 10% player increase, but it could be something else entirely, so don’t take that as gospel or anything.
Regardless, all Treyarch has to do now is repeat this feat one and a half times, and they should have as many players on the map as Fortnite and PUBG allow for. I believe in you, Treyarch!
Call of Duty: Black ops 4 launches for PS4, Xbox One, and PC on October 12.
