It’s always exciting to examine the potential candidates of games that could work very well in virtual reality, and invariably, owing to VR’s very nature, games played from a first person perspective end up being the ones we think about most often in this context. It’s hard to imagine a bigger first person game coming out this year than CD Projekt RED’s Cyberpunk 2077– but the Polish studio, unfortunately, isn’t really looking at VR as a viable option for the open world RPG.
Speaking recently in an interview with OnMSFT, John Mamais, head of CDPR’s Cracow studio, talked about VR and whether the studio considered adding it to the upcoming RPG. According to Mamais, though that’s something CDPR “tried”, owing to the fact that VR is quite “experimental and niche”, they ended up not pursuing that option.
“We tried,” said Mamais. “We were thinking about VR but, yeah, we’re not doing anything with VR.”
“Some things would work in VR but, I think, it’s not really viable yet,” he added. “You’re not making a lot of money in VR yet. It’s very experimental and niche, yeah. I would like to. I like VR but we’re not doing anything with it yet.”
Cyberpunk 2077 is out on September 17 for the PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Stadia. CD Projekt RED are also working on separate multiplayer component for the game, but you shouldn’t expect to see that anytime soon.
