The walls around platforms continue to be torn down as cross-play becomes more of an expected feature in video games. There’s not a lot of titles that boast full cross-play just yet, and Phoenix Labs’ monster hunting free to play action RPG Dauntless is one of them– but with the next generation of consoles right around the corner, the question stands of what happens to Dauntless and Phoenix Labs’ “One Dauntless” vision of having cross-play across every system the game is on.
Nothing- nothing happens. As per Phoenix Labs’ Director of Marketing Nick Clifford, the studio is looking to bring Dauntless on every new piece of hardware it can, including the PS5 and the next Xbox. When it does launch on those systems, it will still support cross-play with all the others- a generation gap isn’t going to get in the way of that.
“We are ravenous for the latest hardware, whether that’s a new RTX video card or a new console from Microsoft,” said Clifford while speaking with PSU. “We don’t have any concrete plans just because it’s so super fresh and we know so little about it. But I can tell you – philosophically, as a studio – when a new platform comes to market, absolutely yes, 100%. We want to be a part of it because, again, we want to continue to expand our ‘One Dauntless‘ vision, where Dauntless is everywhere and accessible and cross-platform-cross-everything, for sure.”
Dauntless has seen great success since launch, and there’s no doubting that its cross-play functionality is hugely responsible for that. The game is available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, with Nintendo Switch release scheduled for later in the year. Read our review through here.
