Diablo 4 Requires Seasonal Characters for Accessing Battle Pass Content

Players can't level the Battle Pass with current characters and must create a seasonal character when Season 1 launches.

With the successful launch of Diablo 4 out of the way, Blizzard Entertainment is looking towards Season 1, which launches in mid-to-late July. As with many action RPG looters, players must create new seasonal characters to experience the new content. These will transfer to the Eternal Realm or the base game after the season ends.

However, those who purchased the Premium Battle Pass (included with the Deluxe and Premium Editions) can surely play in the Eternal Realm and level it up. Right? Wrong. As series GM Rod Fergusson clarified on Twitter, “To take part in the seasonal questline, mechanics, season journey and battle pass, you must create a new seasonal character.

“Playing campaign with seasonal character (if you so desire or need to finish) will also progress the season journey and battle pass.” While this is somewhat expected, as the team discussed how intimately tied the Battle Pass and Seasonal Journey are, having to make a brand new character is drawing ire from some players.

It’s somewhat different from other titles like Fortnite, Destiny 2 or Overwatch 2, where playing all modes can level the Battle Pass. Nevertheless, given how Diablo and other looters work, it was expected that only seasonal characters would be able to level up the pass. Time will tell if this changes in future seasons, so stay tuned.

Diablo 4 is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5 and PC. Check out our review here.
