Diablo 4 has been very successful for Blizzard Entertainment, with over 12 million players as of August 23rd. While it’s employing seasonal model for new updates, expansions are also in the works. Series GM Rod Fergusson recently confirmed to Dexerto that the team will release expansions annually.
When asked about the future of Diablo 4 and how far the team’s vision goes, Fergusson said it’s “years and years.” “When you look at the launch of the game and this first season, we see that as building a foundation on which we can build for the future. So, as we look at our quarterly seasons, and we look at our annual expansions, those are the things that we’re focused on for our live service.
“We’ve got plans. We have storylines that go well into the future. We’ve got plans. We’re always leapfrogging our seasons and expansions, so it’s something we are going to do for a long time. We’re excited.
“When you look back and realize that there were 11 years between Diablo 3 and Diablo 4, that feels like we didn’t live up to our players, our community, and what they deserve. That’s something we are rectifying in Diablo 4 with our seasons and expansions.”
The developer previously said there would be expansions, and two are confirmed to be in development. However, this is the first real confirmation of how often they’ll release. Whether we get one this year or at least an announcement remains to be seen. How much they’ll cost is another factor, especially given the criticism against the game’s monetization.
Diablo 4 is in the middle of Season of the Malignant, with its second season, Season of Blood, going live on October 17th. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.
