DOOM Eternal Update 1 Now Available, Adds Empowered Demons and Precious Metals Event

It also adds Denuvo Anti-Cheat on PC, which is causing controversy for being a kernel-level driver.

Id Software’s first major update for DOOM Eternal is now live, introducing Empowered Demons into one’s campaign experience. These demons are essentially tougher versions of existing foes that have slayed other players. Take them out and avenge the fallen to earn bonus event XP, a ton of resources and more.

That bonus event XP will go a ways towards unlocking new cosmetics from the Precious Metals event (like the MC Pain Master Collection). Players can also level Echelons, a special insignia available after level 250 that serves as bragging rights for veteran players. The update also adds Denuvo Anti-Cheat to the PC version, which is needed to play BattleMode.

According to the patch notes, this is kernel-mode driver which is meant to start when the game launches and stop when it’s closed. The anti-cheat doesn’t scan one’s file system, take screenshots or stream shellcode, though many are concerned as to why it offers kernel-level access. At the very least, it can be uninstalled at any time but stay tuned for more updates from id Software and Bethesda.
