Final Fantasy 14 is Coming to Switch 2 in August, Nintendo Switch Online Not Required

A separate subscription is still required, but like other platforms, there's a free trial, with Shadowbringers set to be added.

Despite some stumbles with Dawntrail, the Final Fantasy 14 hype train is apparently back on track, especially following the reveal of Evercold at Fan Fest 2026. The next expansion arrives in January 2027 and promises some major revamps to combat, the Armory and more. However, before then, Nintendo Switch 2 can finally join the millions of Warriors of Light in August.

Square Enix confirmed at the Fest’s keynote that the port will receive a one-month early access period to check stability. There’s no limit on playtime in the trial, and best of all, it’s being expanded to include the critically acclaimed Shadowbringers expansion. That’s a hefty amount of content (though there are several restrictions on free players).

Once the free trial is up, you’ll need to pay a monthly subscription, and if you’re an existing player, you’ll receive a 50 percent discount. And while Nintendo Switch Online isn’t required, the former is separate, which could mean a higher base price than other platforms. Time will ultimately tell.

Regardless, if you’ve ever wanted to play Final Fantasy 14 on the go, or add even more to your Switch 2 backlog, then it may be worth checking out later this year. As for Evercold, it’s set to introduce a new raid series, cities, dungeons, a level cap increase (100 to 110) and two new Jobs.
