It’s official now that next gen is right around the corner. Microsoft’s Project Scarlett launches in Holiday of 2020, and though Sony haven’t given a release window for the PS5, one would assume that it’d be launching around that time as well. But that does present an interesting question about some upcoming releases- particularly, Final Fantasy 7 Remake.
Given its release timeline, it wouldn’t be a stretch to assume that future parts will be launching on the PS5- but what we don’t know is if Square Enix will launch the upcoming first part as well. Given the fact that the PS5 is going to be backward compatible, Final Fantasy 7 Remake’s first part will, of course be playable on the system, but are Square Enix planning an enhanced re-release for more powerful hardware as well?
Game Informer posed the question to Square Enix’s president and CEO, Yosuke Matsuda, who said that the development team is building the game with both, current and next gen hardware in mind, saying that fans will be able to enjoy the title on both.
“I believe that our teams have made it so that the game will support both the next generation and the current generation of consoles,” he said. “I believe it is being developed so that it is going to be playable on both, so I’m not really concerned about that and I believe that the fans are also going to be able to enjoy it on both, including the next-generation of consoles.”
That’s not an official confirmation, and it’s also worth noting that if the PS5’s backward compatibility is the kind that properly enhances legacy software, a re-release might not be necessary. That said, we can at least take solace in the fact that all parts of the upcoming remake will be properly playable on next gen hardware.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake is out on March 3, 2020 for the PS4. We recently got good, long look at its combat in an extended gameplay reveal, while the character design for the fan-favourite Tifa was also shown off. Take look.
