At yesterday’s Square Enix Presents showcase, Project Athia made surprise appearance, and was finally given an official name- Forspoken. Shortly afterward, an update was posted about the game on the official PlayStation blog, with the game’s director and head of Luminous Productions Takeshi Aramaki sharing new details on the game.
Forspoken takes place in the “fantastical and dangerous” world of Athia, with protagonist Frey Holland – played by Ella Balinska – embarking on a “a thrilling, other-worldly adventure” and faces “face treacherous trials” as she attempts to unravel the mysteries of the land. Frey is described as “an ordinary young woman who must harness her magical abilities” to survive in the treacherous lands of Athia.
Not many gameplay details have been shared, but as you’d expect, Aramaki confirms that Forspoken is an action RPG. The little that we’ve seen of the game in its two trailers so far have shown powers of flight and fantastical traversal, and it seems like that’s definitely going to be a focus in the game. “Frey is able to traverse the world with incredible speed and fluidity,” Arakami writes. “I can’t wait for players to experience firsthand just how satisfying it feels to move through Athia, scaling cliffs, and leaping across ravines in the future.”
Meanwhile, new screenshots taken from the game’s recent trailer have also been released, which you can view below.
Forspoken will launch for PS5 and PC some time in 2022.
