From Software Explains Dark Souls 2 Graphical Downgrade

"Balancing" issues.

Dark Souls 2 released recently to great critical response and positive fan reaction, but the one thing that a few players were disappointed with and complained about was on the technical side of things. Gamers felt that Dark Souls 2’s visuals were not up to the standards of the game’s initial reveal and felt that they had been heavily downgraded.

Developer From Software has now given a response in relation to these complaints, saying that the game’s visuals were brought down a few pegs during the course of development because of constant balancing to the gameplay and to the technical aspects of the game.

“Throughout the game development process, a game is constantly being balanced not only in game playability, but also in the realm of resource management,” a From Software rep said while speaking with MCV.

“A developer is always challenged with creating the most rewarding gaming experience while delivering continuity in graphical quality, gameplay dynamics, and balance within the game,” From continued. “he final version of Dark Souls II displays the culmination of this delicate balance and we’re very proud of the positive media and fan reception for the game.”

We reviewed Dark Souls 2 a little over a week ago and said that while it’s more of the same in a lot of ways, it is, overall, a very good game. You can read our review here.
