Gamescom is set to take place in Cologne, Germany later this month, and as has been the case for a few years now, it’ll be kicking off with a live stage show in Gamescom Opening Night Live. Produced and hosted by The Game Awards and Summer Game Fest creator Geoff Keighley, ONL tends to bring several major new updates and announcements every year, but what should we expect from this year’s showcase?
Speaking recently with VGC, Keighley touched on the topic, and stated that this year’s Gamescom Opening Night Live will be more focused on offering updates and new looks at some of the biggest games coming out in the next 12 months, rather than new announcements of upcoming titles. Thus far, updates for Alan Wake 2 and Black Myth: Wukong have been confirmed for the showcase.
“It’s going to be an exciting show with new looks at many announced upcoming games like Alan Wake 2 and Black Myth: Wukong,” Keighley said. “This year’s ONL is less about announcing brand new projects, and more about giving fans updates on some of the biggest games due out over the next year.”
Whether that means there won’t be any new announcements whatsoever remains to be seen, though presumably, there should be at least a few. For instance, leaks have indicated that a new LEGO Harry Potter game could be unveiled. Either way, what’s clear is that the bulk of the show’s focus is going to be on providing new looks at upcoming games that have been already announced.
Gamescom Opening Night Live is set for August 22. It is currently unknown what the show’s runtime will be.
