A lengthy campaign and suite of multiplayer modes awaits those who dive into The Coalition’s Gears 5 this September. However, as is always the case, the question remains: Will the developer add a battle royale mode at some point? Despite the sheer number of clones over the years, titles like Fortnite Battle Royale, Apex Legends, and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds continue to do well.
Speaking to GameSpot, multiplayer director Ryan Cleven clarified that there would be no battle royale mode at launch. “Gears 5 does not include a battle royale mode,” he said. “We’re big fans of the battle royale genre, but we would want to ensure we bring a battle royale mode to Gears in a meaningful way. We’re actively listening to our Gears community and will look to further evolve our game modes based on player feedback post-launch.”
It makes sense, considering that the combat in Gears 5 has always been more about the up close and personal encounters as compared to skirmishing in open fields. Regardless, there will be plenty of other modes for players to hop into, like Versus – which contains Arcade, Escalation, and King of the Hill – and Horde. There’s also the new Escape mode for three-player co-op shenanigans.
Gears 5 is out on September 10th for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. It’s available four days earlier to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscribers and Ultimate Edition pre-orders.
