The Coalition’s Gears 5 has been out and about for a while with the developer working to address criticism for its microtransactions. There is some future planning going on though, especially when it comes to what Gears 6 could be like. In a recent podcast hosted by composer Hamidreza Nikoofar, art director Aryan Hanbeck shared some thoughts on the next game.
Hanbeck said he was speaking to his team of artists and encouraged them to watch The Handmaid’s Tale, a dystopian show that airs on Hulu. He feels that there are certain things, like “the composition, the color, and just the cinematography” that could be used for Gears 6.
“One thing – the guys here will probably laugh if they see this – but I’ve been telling all the artists nonstop to go watch Handmaid’s Tale…The composition, the color, and just the cinematography and symbolism actually is just off the charts. So, I watched that and I’m like, ‘Wow we gotta find a way to get more of this stuff in Gears 6.‘”
It should be interesting to see how that aesthetic fits into the sequel, especially given how long we’ll have to wait for Gears 6 to release. Gears 5 has a long ways to go yet especially in terms of multiplayer support. The Coalition recently added six new characters to multiplayer including the Swarm Warden and the classic General RAAM. Stay tuned for more updates in the meantime.
