Gears of War: E-Day Features Low-Ground Cover, Optional Objectives, and Even Jumping

From the development of Kalona as a distinct character to the return of urban warfare, The Coalition's prequel is looking mighty fine.

With the Xbox Games Showcase, the attention turns to Gears of War: E-Day courtesy of its dedicated Direct. The Coalition delves into everything you should know, starting with the inspiration for the prequel – namely that scene in the original game’s “Mad World” trailer where Marcus fires at a Corpser.

It all kicks off with Marcus and Dom trying to adjust to civilian life and the sacrifice of Dom’s brother, Carlos, who Marcus was close to. Of course, things quickly take a turn as the Locust invade Kalona. Locations that you strolled through prior are now in ruins, and war has come to Sera once more.

Kalona is a character unto its own here with layers and personality but also the classic Gears art direction – ruined beauty punctuated by towering architecture, grounded technology, and more. Of course, it’s distinct from previous locations, but the feeling of fighting through tight streets and open spaces (with more verticality) from previous titles is retained.

To that end, The Coalition revamped movement completely, adding new low-ground cover, sliding from sprint and even the ability to jump, though that last one seems context-sensitive. Taking a page out of Gears 5’s playbook, you can also take on optional objectives, like helping survivors stranded in a building or potentially helping out with another squad’s ambush. These can be ignored if you so choose, though.

Between all the little details, visceral combat and the return of E-Holes (and massive sinkholes that vehicles can sink into), Gears of War: E-Day is certainly a dream come true for fans. It’s out on October 6th for Xbox Series X/S as a console exclusive and PC.
