Gears of War: E-Day Will Have Multiplayer, Creative Director Suggests

"Gears has a pretty clear DNA for gameplay modes, so you can probably anticipate where we'll be going with E-Day," says Matt Searcy.

At the Xbox Games Showcase earlier this month, Microsoft and The Coalition unveiled Gears of War: E-Day, and though we’ve heard some intriguing details about its single-player campaign – from the fact that it’s going to be entirely linear to how it’ll be returning to the original Gears’ horror-adjacent vibes – little to nothing has been said about its multiplayer component.

In fact, is it even going to have multiplayer? Gears is, of course, a series that has historically placed great emphasis on its multiplayer offerings, and though The Coalition and Microsoft have yet to officially confirm that E-Day will do the same, creative director Matt Searcy has indicated that that will indeed be the case.

Speaking in a recent interview with Windows Central, though Searcy didn’t outright confirm that Gears of War: E-Day will feature multiplayer, he stated that as the series’ next mainline game, it’s going to offer the sort of variety in modes players have come to expect from Gears.

“I would say, this is the next mainline Gears game,” he said. “Gears has a pretty clear DNA for gameplay modes, so you can probably anticipate where we’ll be going with E-Day.”

Exactly what modes we can expect is something that The Coalition will be speaking about later, but just in case there was any doubt over whether the game would feature multiplayer, this should put that to bed.

Gears of War: E-Day is in development for Xbox Series X/S and PC. No release window has been officially announced, but reports have claimed that the game could be targeting 2025 release.
