There are many games that never sell 6 million copies across their entire time on the market. Heck, some of the most beloved game series of all time, such as Persona, have sales of 6.9 million across every single game that they have ever released, put together.
And then there is Grand Theft Auto 5. Rockstar’s last game was a mammoth success, and currently stands as the highest selling game of all time, with a staggering 70 million copies shipped across all platforms worldwide. And as many as 6 million units worth of those sales came from the UK alone. According to GFK Chart-Track, GTA5 is now at 6 million copies sold in the UK, which means that about 1 in every 10 citizens of the UK own the game.
The actual number is likely to be even higher, because GFK Chart-Track does not track digital sales, which likely constituted a not insignificant portion of the game’s total sales. Yikes. I guess we now know why expectations from Red Dead Redemption 2 are so high, then.
