Sony hasn’t consistently followed one single post-launch model for all of its game, and though a number of its premium first party releases have received DLC and expansions following release, that hasn’t been the case for many others. Horizon Forbidden West, which launched earlier in the year, is seemingly going to fall in the former category.
Prominent insider The Snitch recently took to Twitter to post a cryptic tease of an upcoming announcement, showing Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Los Angeles on a map (the setting of Horizon Forbidden West) with the shape of what looks like a Focus (small communication devices in the Horizon universe) overlaid on top.
As per journalist Tom Henderson on Insider Gaming, this is a tease for an upcoming Horizon Forbidden West expansion, titled Burning Skies. The expansion is reportedly set in the aforementioned region, further south of the area where the base game takes place. In-universe, the area is known as the Burning Shores, and is passingly referenced by characters on several occasions.
According to Henderson, Horizon Forbidden West: Burning Shores will be announced “imminently”, though it remains to be seen exactly when that will be- though it’s likely that Guerrilla and Sony will take the stage at the upcoming The Game Awards later this week to unveil the expansion. Burning Shores is allegedly due out in April 2023.
We’ve had a couple of indications over the past few months that Guerrilla’s open world action RPG might indeed be getting post-launch content in the near future. An age ratings guide video published by the VSC Rating Board earlier this year suggested the same, as did subsequent tweet by actor Lance Reddick, who plays Sylens in the Horizon games- though the tweet was promptly taken down.
Horizon Forbidden West is available on PS5 and PS4.
