LEGO 2K Drive Developer Intends to Make Multiple Sequels

"We all want this to be a multi-year arc. We want there to be a Drive 2, 3, 4 and 5," says executive producer Mark Pierce.

For nearly two decades, LEGO-licensed video games have followed a very specific formula, but it seems like the future is going to look very different for them. Recently, 2K announced LEGO 2K Drive, an open world AAA racer developer by Visual Concepts, and it seems the developers are already envisioning a future where the game will spawn multiple sequels.

Speaking in a recent interview with VGCLEGO 2K Drive’s executive producer Mark Pierce said that the game is being viewed as a “multi-year arc” that will span multiple sequels.

“We all want this to be a multi-year arc,” he said. “We want there to be a Drive 2, 3, 4, and 5.”

Meanwhile, Pierce also confirms that Visual Concepts and 2K Games have plans for plenty of post-launch plans for the upcoming game that will allow them to take the game to “the levels” that they knew they wouldn’t be able to get to right at launch. This will include content that goes “beyond just cars”, as per Pierce.

“There’s several stuff that we have planned for post-launch that takes it to the levels that we knew we couldn’t do within the launch game,” he said. “We want to expand the creativity beyond just cars, right? We’d love to be able to build all sorts of things.”

What exactly will these post-launch plans entail? That obviously remains to be seen, but Pierce has said that they will include plenty of collaborations with other properties, as one would expect from a LEGO game.

LEGO 2K Drive will launch on May 19 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. It’s been confirmed that the game will feature microtransactions.
