Mass Effect Andromeda Starts Roughly Around Mass Effect 2

Though the actual story begins 600 years later.

Where does Mass Effect Andromeda, recently showcased by Bioware in a new trailer besides receiving heaps of new information, fit into the overall timeline of the series? We finally have the answer according to Bioware.

The actual Andromeda Initiative launched in 2185 CE. That’s the same year that Commander Shepard was resurrected by Cerberus in Mass Effect 2. The implication then is that in traveling to a new galaxy, the crew of the Initiative never knew about the Reapers invading in Mass Effect 3 or even about Shepard still being alive or the mass relays being destroyed.

However, the actual story-line of Andromeda really starts in 2785 CE. That’s because the crew was asleep for 600 years, traveling great distances to find a new galaxy to settle down in. As it stands now, Mass Effect Andromeda has a starting point in the main trilogy but the actual tale is so far removed that it’s now a different story altogether.
