Earlier this week, a number of journalists got the chance to play an extended gameplay session of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Overall, the first impressions are great, so we’ve picked out some of the best for you thanks to one of the attendee’s being nice enough to answer questions via Twitter.
Francesco Fossetti from Everyeye.it was asked a number of questions by fans on Twitter. When asked if the game was a technical improvement over Ground Zeroes, he answered, “Some texture effects are not as good, but environments immensely more wide!” When asked to elaborate on what isn’t as good, he replied, “Just surface effects of certain textures, bump map type. But the code isn’t final!”
When asked to compare it the PS4 builds quality to the E3 trailer, he admitted that he would “have to rewatch the trailer” but assures that “the quality is really high.” One of the more pressing concerns was frame rate. When asked “Does it run at 60fps?”, he responded, “All 60. Dips almost absent, really sporadic and mostly during cut scenes.” Good stuff.
Mother Base Customisation also came up in the questions. When asked how deep this customisation went, he answered that it’s, “Very deep, well implemented even if initially not too intuitive. You can build bridges, place weapons and create divisions of soldiers with specific tasks who can help you during missions (recon, gadget development).”
One user asked, “Can you request an intervention of a squad of soldiers from Mother Base, or just support helicopters?” To which the response was, “For now support. Recon, supply drop, bombings.” Finally, another user asked, “Has the ‘open’ approach to boss fights convinced you, or do you lose something?” The response, “The first I have encountered! And it’s beautiful!”
Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain releases 1st September on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PS3. The Steam version will be out on September 15th.
